Wheel Lugs

Recommended Posts

dobeleo

I took my 312-A apart and am putting it together, just repainted the wheels and baught new tires, now the problem begins. I can not find my wheel lugs!

I have rebuilt 4 engines in my garage since I started this project and have moved parts all over the place.

On the Toro website, the part number is 1004 and discontinued.

Where could I get these bolts?

I am sure once I buy them, the bolts will turn up!

Thanks all for your comments!

Get some bolts and then use chrome lug nuts. Did it to one of my tractors, and gonna do to the rest. Looks good IMO and easier to put the tires on.

They have them at sears. Can buy bolts, but since you got to replace them I would buy 10 bolts and 10 lugs nuts. I forget the exact size - I had one in my hand to compare when I went, but I guess you don't. I can check later if you need it - I am goign to sears for some parts. The lugs and bolts will run you $20.

I think I got some spares also if you need I can mail them to you. But may be a couple days.

dan, like the boys said, go with bolts and lug nuts. It'll be the best few dollars you ever spent and makes changing wheels a breeze! :wh:

yea the bolts and lug nuts sounds like a great idea. I'll stop at the hardware store this evening.

I think the painted rims will look better without the hub caps anyway.

I like to have the look of orginal with a slight dressed up touch. I purchased 7/16 fine thread stainless steel bolts from mc master carr. I turn a ring with the taper to fit under the bolt head. This provides the tapered part of the lug bolt. Also when you tighten them down the taper seats in the rim allowing to tighten on the ring like a washer helping to protect the nicely painted rims.

Thanks DanPatch,

Went to Home Depot and picked up some 7/16-20 bolts and rounded the edge. No metric in stock, just metric. Rounded the edge of the bolt heads a touch for seating the rim.

Now I got the wheels on and at least I can move the tractor around the garage and clean things up a little!

I will take some pics this weekend, tractor has a great looking stance with the new tires!

While at Home Depot, I was checking out the garden tractors on display (Cub Cadet, Deere), I can not beleive how these things look like toys compared to a Wheel Horse!

Thanks for your help!

Danpatch, could post some pictures on this ? I want to do the lug nut conversion on my 314-8, so I will be ordering the bolts soon. I went ahead and bought chrome close-ended acorn lug nuts to dress them up, but my concern is that the lug nut taper will not fit into the bolt holes very well, if at all. I really don't want to screw up the wheels.

Sorry to hijack your thread Dobeleo...

Yeah, I happened to be at the 'po today myself and looked at the econo-tractors they had parked out front row on row. I didn't stay long and just walked away shaking my head in disgust. :wh:

How does one get those little dashes around a Quote

At the top right corner of the post you wish to quote, you will find a QUOTE "button".

Clicking it will open a window similar to when you click the REPLY "button", but there will also be a message box (labeled "Original Post to Quote") below with the contents of the post you wish to quote.

You will also notice "You may edit the post you are quoting here" written on the left side.

Feel free to edit and/or remove extra text and/or images & emoticons that aren't relevant to the reason you are quoting.

I might add when editing a quote, be sure to leave the

4518c065.jpg at the beginning, and the b05659af.jpg at the end, otherwise you will lose your little dashes.

But....... the HTML tags are only there when you edit a quote "after the fact" or if the poster inserts them intentionally. They are not visible within the white message box when using the QUOTE "button" at the top right corner -- but they will appear once the post is previewed.

@Chas:

If you don't want to use the post quote "button", you can copy and paste the text you wish to quote directly into your post and use the HTML tags to make it appear as a quote.
insert the quoted text here
would look like this:

insert the quoted text here

However, using the QUOTE "button" automatically inserts the name of the person you are quoting, and the time and date of their post.

I know you already took care of this, Dan........ but for future reference, the new P/N for the OEM wheel bolts is 83-2720. (less than $2 each)

Here's one I did a few years ago (for my son):

4878bc65.jpg

7/16"- 20 X 1 1/2" (fully threaded) bolts out through from the back with chrome "acorn" lug nuts for a GM product.

I got the bolts and acorn nuts from a local surplus store that sells hardware by the pound. (cheap)

Post back on track now.

That looks real nice TT. Are those rims flipped around? I like the way they look.

Yes, they are 312 rims / 22-9.00-12 tires that are installed "wrong side out".

That tractor was a "freebie" 1970 Commando 7 that I stretched the frame, reworked the grille, raised the rear fenders & added bigger tires, added a 12hp Briggs, etc. so my son (who was around 9 or 10 at the time) had something cool to take to the shows. :wh:
