WH Raider10 17 #1 Posted April 6, 2011 Hi, Today while cleaning the 312-8 I noticed the special set screw that holds the shifter in place has broken off... There is still a piece of it inside the hole in the tranny, that's probably what still keeps the shifter in place. Should I drill it out and replace with a new set screw? Any help would be welcome. dgjks6 6 #2 Posted April 6, 2011 its a special dog point set screw or something like that. I had the same thing happen. I bought a broken screw extractor kit and removed it and put a new one in. Don't know if that is possible with the transmission still on, though. I never recommend not fixing things, but if is working now, leave it alone. When it breaks, then fix it. The problem with that is, it will break at the most inconvenient time. To prevent that, I would buy the screw extractor and the replacement dog point screw and let it sit by the tractor so it knows you have the pieces, just in case. stevasaurus 22,863 #3 Posted April 6, 2011 Every hing said above is true, but if the lock nut is still there you may luck out...or if not...if any threads are there to grab...still an easy fix. If nothing to grab, you will have to drop the trans. A couple of recent threads exist below here about the dog set screw thingy and where to get it. Hope that helps.
Irv 115 #4 Posted April 6, 2011 Just had that same problem with my 314-8. Mine was easy to screw out. See if you can get a small screwdriver in there and start it out til you can do it with your finger. It's kinda awkward to get at but easier than pulling the tranny. It might be worth it to take the brake rockshaft out (not hard) to make it easier to get at the screw. Good luck! Oh, and you might want to make sure you can get a new one (part #1239) beforehand. My dealer didn't have them so I got a couple from Jack's. http://www.jackssmallengines.com/searchdb2.cfm
WH Raider10 17 #5 Posted April 7, 2011 Thanks for the help guys! I'll see if there are some threads still sticking out and may be able to get it out without taking the whole tranny of the chassis. That would be a bummer! P-J :wh:
tunahead72 2,432 #6 Posted April 7, 2011 WH Raider10, Just a friendly word of advice before you start taking things apart down there -- think first about what you're about to do, and be VERY careful if you end up having to actually take the gear shift lever out of its opening in the transmission. It's just WAY too easy to drop a screw/nut/pin in there, and then you'll have to wrestle with the idea of removing the transmission and splitting the case to get it out -- no need to ask me how I know, I'll be starting my own thread here as soon as my head is clear again.... <_< Take your time, and good luck!
