why are some tractors 6 speed? and some 8speeds? don't they all have 3 forward and 1 reverse with high/low shifter. What is the difference between an 8 and 10 pinnon trany?

6 speeds only "count" the forward gears.

8 speeds also count reverse (in both ranges) because it looked better when advertising.

And yes, if you want to get technical, they're both 3 speeds forward, one reverse, and high & low range.

The difference between an 8 pinion and a 10 pinion differential is two pinions.

The 10 pinion differentials had the "spring ring" to try and make it limited slip. They also had weaker (hollow) pinions compared to the 8 pinion units. (fitting 8 gears in the same space as 10 also means each pinion can be larger and the carrier and ring gear can be stronger)

Here's the difference:

Is there any markings (numbers) on trany case that will tell if it's a 8 or 10 pinion transmission ? Or is it by year and model? The 8 pinion is the stronger transmission? I have a raider 12 6 speed what will it have ? Under normal use is a 10 pinion ok? Lots of questions trying to learn more about :wh:

thanks

No, there is no markings on the trans to tell you what you have. It really is by your tractor model if the trans is original. One thing for sure...if you have a 4 speed trans..(no hi/lo) then you have a 4 pinion differential...if original. You could have the heavier trans with the beveled gear differential, but not if it is the original trans. I would guess that you have the 4 pinion differential.
