Another 702 Restoration ?

Recommended Posts

Suburban 550

Well, it all started over the 701 Mike had recently bought and the complete restoration he's going to do on it. I had bought this 702 back in November for $150.00 at an estate sale and because of lack of time and not knowing what to do with it, it has sat ever since. I had thought of using it as a parts donor for the 701 Mike bought off e-bay, but decided on not bidding on the 701 because I already have too many unfinished projects. BTW Mike, glad you got it and I know you'll do a great job on the restoration. Right after I brought the 702 home, I replaced the fuel pump, rebuilt the carburetor, complete tune up, and discovered it had a short block replacement not to long ago. The 7 h.p. engine runs real strong with a slight growling sound in the starter-generator, so I ordered brushes and bearings for it last week. Today I had some free time and decided to go out and get some work done on it (wasn't touched since December) where I decided to pull the transmission out of it since it was full of water and frozen when I brought it home. Here are some pic's from the time I brought It home til' now.

Day I brought it home

After some cleanup and got it runnin'

Cracks around bolt holes in frame

Makin' a plate to repair and strengthen the frame

Plate in place with holes drilled and not yet welded

Ouch! After cleaning up outside of the transmission I found this. Looks like a total teardown and rebuild. I knew all the seals were blown out from the frozen water, but never expected the needle bearings hangin' out the side of the case. Could someone tell me exactly what I need to fix this fiasco? Is this a pressed in bearing or part of the case?

IMG_0582.jpg

Starter-generator rebuild will be the next thing done as soon as the kit arrives. Disconnected the belt and spun it by hand and could feel the roughness in the bearings.

IMG_0581.jpg

My Wheel Horse buddy, Terry JW stopped by for some moral support and to lend a helping hand.

IMG_0570.jpg

Plan as of right now to have it up and runnin' and mechanically sound with a chance of bringin' it to the big show unpainted. After that, a total disassembly and Basecoat/Clearcoat paint job. This one will be a little different then my other restorations because the color of choice will be a metallic Electric Current Red.

Ray, the bearing is pressed in, you should be able to drive it right out and replace it. The bearings are available from Toro I think, but will be spendy.

By the way, I am soooooo looking for ward to this resto. Your work is incredible.

Can't wait to see it at the show, paint or no paint.

If you want to do some engine work at the show, at night, under the trees, with a flashlight, I will bring Pandora's box, a good set of Chinese drill bits, and a mini MagLight. :wh:

Jim, thanks for the info on the bearing. :D Indy, you're right on the HY-2 kit, there may be one in the near future. Bob, hopefully we won't need "Pandoras Box" full of carpentry tools to drill a head bolt out. :D Threads in the head look good on this one. :wh: Vinnie and Denny, thanks for the compliments. I'll really have to take a good look at the transmission case on this to make sure there aren't any cracks. I will probably tear it down between now and the weekend to see what I need. Got the starter-generator bearing-brush kit in the mail today, so that is another project I have to get done.

Ray, the bearings are a cup type needle roller, an outside "cup" closed on one end with the needle rollers inside it. They're made by Torrington and available through bearing houses at about $7 apiece.

In the Gearbox section there is a cross referance of WH #'s to the Torrington #.

Looks like a nice tidy tractor!

Spent all day yesterday tearing apart the transmission to see all the damage caused by the water that was in it. I actually ended up tearing 2 transmissions apart because the second one would become a parts donor. After inspecting the original transmission I found all the gears to be in pretty good shape with needle bearings all over the place. I also didn't want to take a chance on the case being cracked due to all the frozen water. Transmission 2 was one that I pulled out of the 753/854 round hood worker this winter that kept gettin' jammed in gear while plowin' snow. After tearing that one apart, I found a nice clean case, alot of wear in the gears and a set of bent shiftin' forks. All of the bearings looked like new except the two outer axle bearings (part#1528) that I will replace. Reassembled a good part of it using the case from the donor transmission and most of the gears from the original. I have it shiftin' through all the gears so I must have it done something right. Thanks to digital cameras and Stevasaurus and his transmission rebuild tutorial or I would still be there trying to figure out where all the gears go. :wh: Here are some of yesterdays progess pics.

Another busy Saturday where I got alot done. I got the transmission all back together and back in the tractor, rebuilt the starter-generator, did some welding on belt guard and hood stand bracket where tool box mounts to and finally took it out for a run today. Engine sounds really quiet now that the starter-generator has new bearings and the transmission is shifting though all the gears without any leaks, so I must have done something right. :wh: Now to tighten up the front end and steering and get it mechanically sound, it might make the big show as it is and be all torn down for a restoration when I bring it home. Heres more pics from this weekend.

Rebuilt starter-generator. Have to replace the belt.

Outer bearing that was doing all the growling

Welded tab on the belt guard

Welded bracket for tool box

What's left of the old brake band

IMG_0607.jpg

Transmission in with all the sheet metal back on

IMG_0606.jpg

Another project is the hood. Sheet metal is pretty straight other than someone painting over surface rust.

IMG_0603.jpg

Bottom of hood needs a bracket and some welding

IMG_0604.jpg

Don't ya love when they do somethin' like this instead of turnin' the elbow another 1/2" or so

IMG_0602.jpg

Donor frame for steering parts

IMG_0605.jpg

Alot more to do and am running out of time to do them. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Wow Ray, that's a lot of progress in a day. It's coming together really fast, sure you won't have time to restore it before the show?

It's been awhile since any updates. Got the bottom of the hood repaired (bracket welded back on), an extra set of wheels sandblasted and painted ivory and a new set of Deestone tri-ribs and Carlisle ags mounted and put on this evening. Will be bringing it to the big show as it is and hopefully get it all redone over the winter. Really is turning out to be a pretty decent tractor. :hide: Here are some updated pics.

Thanks Steve. :WRS: It's a real diamond in the rough. I paid more for the new shoes than I did the tractor. :hide:

Nice Tractor Ray and no doubt It will be a class act when you do your Magic :WRS: I Like the Ags kinda partial to them over the reg treads. And to me they just make a tractor look more like a tractor. :) If thats possible? :hide:

Cheers ~Duke
