working on the 1054

well saturday has been nominated as 'tractor day' in our house so i thought id get a few things fixed on the 1054. this is my first tractor so everything will be a first for me as its gets slowly returned to its former glory. ive decided to just get it 100% complete and everything running as it should and enjoy it for a while rather than pull it apart straight away. id like to enjoy the whole 'old thing' with it first before i tear it apart. its only going to be like this once and when its stripped all the cool 'old look' will be gone for good......

had to patch a few holes in one of the rear tires sidewalls from sitting flat for i guess quite a few years. i didnt want to buy new tires just yet so patching will keep them working a little longer. while the wheels were off got the hubs off the axles and made sure all was good. then got the steering rod back together sort of so i could at least ride it around abit. anyway got it going and rode around for 15-20 minutes. then i started having gas problems so the fun ended. the gas line from the pump to the carb fittings have what looks like o rings in them and i guess all the recent new gas activity through them has started to break them down. now the carbs full of the rubber..........

so next will be a carb rebuild and while im doing that will go through the whole fuel system. wiring will be next after that....

i must add that riding this thing is awesome, while that k241 was running good this thing was sweet.....rode it around in 3rd like i was a kid again,no belt slip either so fun take offs!!!!

cant remember having this much fun for quite a while......

if i wasnt hooked already, i definitely am now!!!!!!

Sounds like a good plan to fix things and then tear it apart, the rubber seal that goes in the nut, I have not found a relacement, it is a washer with a thick rubber on it, I have had very good luck by removing the washer, cleaning most of the rubber off, then adding 3 rubber O rings in it's place, every now and then I have to use 4, replace all the fuel lines and use a good filter.

since its saturday again got some more done. worked mostly on the fuel system, pulled the tank(not a 5 min job but wasnt too bad) to clean it out, full of gum and varnish and slight surface rust. did the gravel trick with the tank and came reasonably clean. rebuilt the carb, gave it a bath, had to use a brass washer on the throttle shaft to tighten it up. also fabbed up a gas line from the pump to carb. next will be gas line from tank to pump.

also got the belt guard mounted and messed around with a few other things.

oh by the way a carb kit for these is around $8 from napa and its a genuine kohler kit, and the washers were .80 from the local ace.

Droping the tanks out of those are not fun, I like the new fuel line, did you use steel fuel tubing for the spacers on the belt guard?

i found out that the gas fittings with the o-ring style fitting is almost identical to a standard brass compression fitting, the only difference being the compression ferrule. so replacing the 3/16 line with 1/4 and using the 1/4 brass ferrule is an easy fix. of course you need to use a 1/4 compression nut or drill out the old nut where the line passes through larger . just an fyi....

you know, i was feeling lazy and went through the hardware section while i was getting the spares for the day at farm and fleet. so i grabbed 3 of them.....quick fix.
