Olratlr 25 #1 Posted March 28, 2011 I live here in Va and I planted some Fall Turnips and they growed down like a carrot never got over 2 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. Any Thoughts?
farmer 1,075 #2 Posted March 30, 2011 Very difficult to comment really, to many variables, weather, soil type...you sure it didn't say Radish on the packet One thing you find out in the garden, if you get a failure..try a different variety
puddlejumper 67 #3 Posted March 31, 2011 Never raised a turnip in my life but for some reason potash comes to mind. Assuming there was some correct tillage involved My guess would be your lacking a trace mineral(Boron for example). A internet search of turnip maladies and soil requirements coupled with a soil analysis should give you your answer pretty quick though.
6wheeler 641 #4 Posted March 31, 2011 Work in some Horse Apples .I never planted winter turnips, but I plant them in the spring and they get good size to them. 1 thing to remember, "if the edible part grows underground no nitrogen"! The plant will be 4 feet tall and no fruit. For Radishes, Carrots, Rutebegas, Kolorabi and Turnips, I put a couple of ice cream pail fulls in a 70' row and work em in deep and well. It seems to work for me. Good Luck
