brandonozz 168 #1 Posted March 17, 2011 Can someone with experience with D200's tell me if there is a common problem with these transaxles that would cause them to crack on the bottom of the transaxle? I'm looking to possibly buy a tractor that the current owner was driving when the transaxle started leaking on the bottom - after further inspection he found a cracked hole in the bottom of the transaxle. The crack is just forward of the axle on the right hand side of the case - close to where the case splits in half. What is strange is the owner has a spare transaxle that was repaired in the same exact spot. Anyone else have one crack like this and if so what caused it? My guess is something let go and got caught between a gear and the bottom of the case. Thanks for any input!
dgoyette 12 #2 Posted March 17, 2011 Yes a very common problem with the differential bolts shearing and getting wedged and cracking the case.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,351 #3 Posted March 17, 2011 I have been there and done that... Darren is correct. There are 4 through bolts that hold the bull gear together (has all the pinion gears inside). Typically the early models 73 (Auto 18) until or through 1976 used non hardened bolts. Once they figured this was an issue they changed over to grade 8. Another weak point was the parking brake "pawl" gear would shear the teeth if/when you went to go forward and forgot the parking brake was on. I have several pictures of the process of rebuilding my tranny. There are 2 types of cases so make sure you match your part number up with your replacement. I would NOT try to weld or braze your tranny rather find a good used one (that has not been repaired prior). I bought a used tranny mostly for the cases off a well known used part supplier on ebay who sent me the used tranny only to find out that one was previously repaired (brazed tranny) and when I opened it up many of the gears were damaged I will go look for the pictures I have and then repost them here for you to get an idea of the rebuild process. Here are the pics.. Broken Case Broken bull gear bolts that got caught between the bull gear and case(case lost this battle) Newly installed grade 9!!! bolts (don't want to do this again) Tranny apart Repainted used undamaged cases (thanks to whfan) Finished rebuild ready to go back in !!
brandonozz 168 #4 Posted March 17, 2011 Great information and pics. You mentioned you would not recomend repairing the case. Is this because the structural integrety is compromized? If there are damages to any of the gears are the available? Can bearings and seals be purchased from local bearing distributers? Thanks again for the great info. I'm still trying to decide if I want to tackle this project as I am a newbie.
