TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #2 Posted March 12, 2011  The foot pedal only returns the direction control lever (DCL) to neutral. The only physical "brake" on your tractor is the parking brake - which consists of a pawl that engages one of the reduction gears inside the transaxle and is applied by pulling up on the drive belt disengagement lever. The weak design of the pawl allows it to shear if the tractor is not completely stopped before application. (many of them no longer work) The external drum brake was not installed until 1978 on the automatic (hydro) models. It was applied by the foot pedal - which also returned the DCL to the neutral position. Personally, I never use the "brake" pedal on any of the hydros - unless it is to set the parking brake on the later models. Slowing and stopping is intended to be done by moving the DCL in the opposite direction of travel.
tillett 3 #3 Posted March 12, 2011 will nuetral not hold the tractor from moving? also how hard is it to change brake pawl or should i look for a transmission ?
TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #6 Posted March 13, 2011 will nuetral not hold the tractor from moving? also how hard is it to change brake pawl or should i look for a transmission ? As long as the engine is running and the belt is turning the pump, it could take off if the DCL moves - even slightly. The parking brake pawl is NLA from Toro/WH, but the damaged ones can usually be repaired with new steel & a welder. The transaxle does have to be "split" to access the pawl, but it's not a terrible job. Finding another tranz with a good pawl is probably not going to be easy. Fix what you have and you'll know it's right.
tillett 3 #7 Posted March 13, 2011 THANKS FOR THE HELP I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO LEARN ABOUT HYDRO SO I CAN FIX IT MYSELF AND THANKS FOR THE WELCOME TO REDSQUARE.IVE GOT ALOT OF WHEELHORSE STUFF AFTER I LEARN HOW TO USE THIS COMPUTER I WILL BE POSTING SOME
TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #8 Posted March 13, 2011 If it helps ease your mind, there's nothing complicated about the actual transaxle. It's just a two-piece housing with a few reduction gears and a differential assembly inside. The Sundstrand hydro unit bolts to the outside of the left case half and doesn't even need to be disturbed (except for a few through-bolts) when servicing the parking brake and/or the rest of the transaxle. As a matter of fact, you don't even have to remove the transaxle assembly from the tractor to pull the right half - but it might be a little easier for a "first-timer".
tillett 3 #9 Posted March 13, 2011 IS THERE A EASY SWAP FOR A DIFFERENT HYDRO
oldredrider 2,549 #10 Posted March 13, 2011 I have pulled the parking pawl out of GT-14 for repair (weld up) by removing the hydro motor only. No need to pull trans from tractor or splitting the case. Had a shop weld up pawl for $15.00. Only other cost was a new motor gasket. Also cleaned filter screen while I was in there...again, easy access. Seems like a big job but it can be done a lot quicker than changing out the whole rear. Good luck. smoreau 658 #11 Posted March 13, 2011 It's not hard to fix your trans brake paw. the pump comes off from the left side of the axle housing and you can split the case very easy, of all the wheel horse trans axles they are by far the most simple and easy to put back together. if I remember there are 3 solid gears for a reduction part and a differential, and thats it. oh yah and a pump screen and the parking paw. do not be intimidated by this axle it is very easy to fix and you will learn allot!! You could buy a trans axle on ebay there has been one on there for about $99 for about 6 months (too much $ for me) but you will learn more by fixing it your self. If you get stuck we will be glad to walk you through it, gaskets are about $15 and the paw most likely will need to be straighted and possibly welded if cracked. just use automotive atf for the oil and your alot cheeper then just buying a new axle. maybe $40 max. and maybe 2 hours extra labor then just switching it out. good luck and pm me if you need help Scott
refracman 167 #12 Posted March 13, 2011 I have removed and repaired the pawl without removeing and spliting the trans. Remove the hydro and brake engaugement lever. Then a good light and a pair of long bend and straight needle nose pliers is all you'll need to remove. Lot less time and effort invovled for sure

Terry told you further up the post that the pawl is NLA, and most people repair their damaged one.

My only request is to hit the 'caps lock' key so it's like this, and NOT LIKE THIS. All caps (as it's known) is often considered as 'yelling'. No biggie, just a reminder.
