1973Auto

Trouble with The 1973 Auto. 12 hp Sunstrand auto trany. Only have forward. No reverse, and when I push in the Brake/Clutch it does nothing. Wheels go forward at full speed. Any thoughts /help before I send it some place, preferably not the swap sheet. I am willing to haul it to one of you guys that like/can work on these types of tranys. I am really not that confident in this area. But if it is not too complicated I will give it a shot. I can travel about 100 miles from zip code 14701 to drop off.

T me it sounds like your motion lever is out of ajustment. I'm not to familure with auto trans but this doesn't sound as bad as you might think.

Someone who knows more on the autos will be by to help. Hang in there!

I have a 73 16 auto roller with good trans over by Albany. But if it just started doing it check the linkages and go from there.

C.M.C-175

Sorry, it's a long one! I just recently started having problems with mine also, but my reverse worked, but very s.l.o.w.l.y. i have a C-175. I have spent the last two weekends working on mine. I am by far an expert on these hydro trannys, but I'll give you a few things to check, that I found out about. More times than not, it is a linkage issue. It does not take a whole lot for the linkage to be out of adjustment for it to work properly. One way to check it would be to remove the panel just forward of the seat to expose the linkage. I took mine all apart and started to trouble shoot from there. Just remove all the pieces and parts associated with the forward lever, the ball socket that bolts to the motion lever bail, and the plastic slider that attaches to the pump itself via a triangle shaped trunnion that is connected to the pump shaft. Then, start the tractor and engage the pto drive. Now this is where it can get a little tricky, slowly start to move the trunnion lever to the reverse side (mine is to the left when sitting on the tractor) if it does move, then the problem is in the linkage, not in the pump or the transaxle. Another check would be to remove the rear acceleration valve in the pump to see if one of the pin holes were plugged, thus not letting fluid pass to the reverse valve circuit. Mine ended up being that the linkage would not allow the trunnion lever to rotate completely to the reverse side. So, I ended up scraping all the original linkage and making my own with some ball joint rod ends, some threaded rod and a couple of brackets I had to make. Jury is still out on if that was the fix or not, I have not had a chance to test it yet, due to finishing up to late last night and not quite getting the tractor put back together again, but I do know now that the linkage is not the culprit anymore. Sorry for the long read, but I had a hard time myself trying to get info on the same subject. Thats about all I have for things to check. Good Luck!

Thanks all  It is the plastice cam that controls the F & R motion. It was broke in half. Do they still sell these after market, and if they do, does anyone have a website, or can I still get this from Toro.
