854 hub removal

This is how I managed to get the hubs off. I had the heat them, soaked with PB Blaster for several days, and used the puller to press against the vice to help absorb the shock when I hit it. So I would heat, tighten, hit the chisel, and repeat. They came off, but it took a lot of blaster and lot of beating. I ground the end of the chisel flat because I was cutting into the hub. Tomorrow I am going to install new grease seals and work on the hitch pin some more.

I'm glad that you were able to get the hubs off. I know they can be a LOT of work. I had some problems removing the 3/4" hitch pin from my 702 when I got it. I soaked, heated and worked it for days and days on end and it started to loosen up but just barely. I wasn't concerned about saving it because the hitch had been cut with a torch . I didn't want to take the chance of mushrooming the shaft so what I ended up doing was took a piece of emory cloth and polished the remaining exposed part of the shaft so it would not hang up in the trans case as it passed thru it. Then I drilled a hole in the center of one end of the shaft a good 3/4 of the way thru being careful to keep it level and all . Then I used a long 3/8 " flat punch and inserted it into the hole and drove the pin out. Prior to doing this, I had tried a brass hammer to get it to move but to no avail, once I drilled the hole and used the punch, the pin out it came out pretty darned easy and I didn't have to worry about mushrooming the shaft where it passes thru the trans case. It was fast and easy to do , from beginning to end it took like 15 or 20 minutes, also doing it the way I did, it was more like I was "pulling" the shaft thru the case rather than "pushing" it thru by hitting it on its end the with the brass hammer, which coincidentally can still mushroom the steel shaft even tho the brass is softer than the steel. Ive used this method on a few other projects and it has worked like a charm each time. I hope this is of some help to you.

Using heat we managed to free the hitch on the pin, so now it will rise and lower. I decided that heating the transmission bracket and beating on the pin really didn't gain me that much. So we left it at that, functional but didn't remove the oin. I am happy with that. I can now begin to reassemble the tractor. Hopefully it getw a little warmer this week so I can work out there.
