Brian told me the gas tank is from a...701? (I dont recall exactly, I have it written down) its the older style "solid" tank, as opposed to the two-piece tank with the gasket, which is correct for the 854...which is actually good! (being the "wrong" tank) because I have read that the two-piece tanks tend to leak..so I will probably just end up keeping the "wrong" tank.. as for the dash..im not sure! I actually dont know what model the dash is from.. here is the dash on mine: And here is Jim's 854 from the Redsquare photo album: (and other photos of 864's show that same dash) So yes, mine is definitely the wrong style.. looks like its also an earlier, 1961, 62 or '63 dash style.. I think just the coloring is different, the 854 dash is black on the bottom, and there is text that says "choke" and "throttle".. also on the "correct" 854 tank, notice how the metal of the gas tank sides extend out beyond the dash plate, so that the dash is snuggled into a "pocket" of the tank..while with my tank and dash, the dash plate is as wide and as high as the tank itself, and just kind of sits on the end of the tank, but not "within" the tank..if that makes sense! the proper 854 tank and dash combination just looks slightly more refined.. but not a big deal really..personally it means virtually nothing to me right now thats its wrong! but when it comes time to do a restoration, I will probably want to find the correct dash, "just because".. Im actually not sure if the dimensions of the gas tank on mine are slightly different than the correct 854 tank..the tank on mine looks like its might be a bit longer.. or maybe the only difference is "solid" versus "2 piece"? anyone know? buckrancher 2,679 #41 Posted February 26, 2011 Hi Scot the dash you have is from a 702 701/702 uses a one piece alum tank 701 has a bolt on plastic dash 702 has a metal bolt on dash 753/854 two piece tanks have cast in dash that is part of the tank the only difference between the two years was the dash decal color scheme The two piece tanks hold a little more fuel as the sides are wider( they go out to the insides of the hood where as the 701/702 tanks have a air space after the hold down screw between the hood and tank sides also the 702&753 use the same dash decal (red & white striped) and the 854 has a black and chrome decal hope this helps clear things up a bit Brian Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

jb4249 131 #46 Posted February 28, 2011 I thought I'd put my 2 cents worth in. I bought an 854 last summer. I didn't run, and was in great need of a restor, BUT complete. I got the engine running and ran it around the yard a few times and then took it apart. I have been painting and repairing, and rebuilding all winter. I think that now I am ready to start putting it back together. I think the 854 is a pretty cool old piece and look forward to putting mine back into action. Glad to see someone else thinks the same.
