mr.pipes 4 #26 Posted February 8, 2011 Just remove the gutters and away goes the ice dams to worry about but drains around the foundation is a must or the basement will get all the runoff from the roof Some old farmhouses never had gutters and I wonder how it worked for them?? any chimers on this just a thought Jim The gutters are only on the back of the house and ice dams formed on the front and the back. The front gets more sun than the back so that will also play a role.
mr.pipes 4 #27 Posted February 8, 2011 There was a rebate program that reimburse 75% of insulation jobs recently, hopefully it is still valid. I also found a soffit insulation baffle that looks pretty cool. It is flame retardant and self-extinguishing in less than five seconds. I guess that styrofoam type if very flammable and extremely toxic. This product looks good and idiot proof with blown in insulation.
B-8074 19 #28 Posted February 8, 2011 20# propane tank from the grill and a 25' torch hose hooked up to my weed burner. The melting ice keeps the roof cool and the weed burner keeps you warm. 25' of gutter thawed and flowing in about 30 min.
