dgjks6 6 #1 Posted February 1, 2011 k181 rebuild here. I am on the torque flywheel nut to 85/90 ft/lbs or 250ft/lbs if signs of wear. I got the 85/90 with a strap wrench, but with my son on one end and me on the other we can not get above 100. Is that enough?
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #2 Posted February 1, 2011 85 to 90 ft/lb is the spec. 250 ft/lb would either twist the end off the crankshaft, split the flywheel through the keyway, or both. Where did you see that incorrect bit of information? :banghead:
dgjks6 6 #3 Posted February 1, 2011 kohler manual page 12.15 "if hex head screw is used torque to 250ft/lbs" now that i re read it, it is a grammar thing. They don't mean used hex head screw, they mean if you use a hex head screw (whatever that is)
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #4 Posted February 2, 2011 A hex-head screw is nothing more than a bolt. (which was normally used on the newer engines) It's also 250in(INCH)/lbs - not ft/lbs. There's a HUGE difference.
Anglo Traction 761 #5 Posted February 2, 2011 Yeah, just a bit of difference between the 2. Don't think K181's had Hex Screws(fully threaded shank) on the Flywheel anyway!. Just the Nut.

rmaynard 15,309 #8 Posted February 2, 2011 Do you guys think of Tim Allen on Home Improvement every time you read a post from me? At least Tim Allen always had a good looking girl on the set. You are a wise poster. I fear there are those who would crank the nut to 250 ft/lbs, bust the end off the crankshaft, then post a question asking what happened. Better to ask first than to have to post a Want Ad for a K181 crank.
