pins vs clips

Excuse my terminology, but during my first attempt at a restoration I have a bunch of cotter pins (the split ones you put through and bend) and others that are the "hair pin" cotter pins.

Can I use the hairpin type for everything? They are just easier to take in and out.

I use cotter keys/hair pins on everything I need to take apart, from time to time, I agree they are nicer.

If you are paranoid about using a hair pin (especially in a high vibration area) ? Wrap a couple of turns of stainless steel safety wire around the open end.

Don't have any safety wire ? Buy a spool next time your in Harbor Freight. One spool will last a life time and its not that expensive. Skip the fancy pliers unless you are planning on doing a lot.
