HY rebuild

Recommended Posts

Kelly

I'm rebuilding a HY kit for my round hood project, I have the lift cyl. done and in paint, the pump I just need to get a sealing washer and paint it, the pump is from a Gilson tractor, it has the right rotation on the pump, so I used it for this project, it is very close to the pump used on the 953/1054 tractors, it does not have a fill port drilled into the pump body, it fills with a plug in the the reservoir, this pump has the late style spring, I have a picture of both early and late, if your parts are in good shape the rebuild only takes a few hours to clean and reseal both units, here is the pictures of the rebuild.

Kelly: That Gilson pump looks a lot like the old 702 pump (I think HY 2) with the longer cylinder valve and the straight threaded up/down handle.

I did not know Gilson had Hein-Werner hydraulic pumps also but that is good to know. I have seen them on Cub Cadets and Panzers but they were probably on a few others as well since they are such a good pump.

How did you gt your lift cylinder apart and where did you get you O rings for the lift cylinder. It looks real good with all the new rings and red paint!

The pump is the same as the HY-2 and 3, the style, that mount in front of the shifter, the 953/1054's use the flat handle, I got the O rings and backers from a hyd. shop, all the seals for the pump and the cyl. was $23, today I picked up the cup washer with the rubber face at Fastenal co. the lady gave them to me, I love that place, heck the ones I got today are even stainless, to take the cyl. apart you take fittings out, and then it pulls apart, the fittings are the only thing that holds it together.

just me

How does the pump run? Is it off the PTO or is it on the flywheel side? Also where is the reservoir located? Can you post pictures of this on your tractor? I really want to adapt something to one of my tractors and was thinking of going with a power steering pump just cause I feel it may be cheaper and easier to find for me but if I can go dig around a junk yard that has some GT's around maybe I can find one of these.

it runs off the PTO side, these pumps are getting hard to come by in good shape, the reservoir is on the pump, if you look back at the pictures you see the one with the long shaft sticking out? that is the pump, the reservoir is the tank that bolts to that, a PS pump will work just make sure you turn it the right way, here is a picture I just took of the pump mounted to size the hoses, I don't have the pulley on it here, but it goes on the shaft with the tape on it, I have a thread going on my round hood tractor build, watch that for a update on the pump set up and more pictures of it mounted.
