Snow Blower Modification

Recommended Posts

mrocket49

I was having a problem with the larger stones in my gravel driveway when snowblowing. The impeller would pick up the stones and sometimes they would get caught before the snow would exit the chute. This would cause the ends of the impeller blades to bend over. I thought about the mod for the two-stage blowers I saw on this website and thought about adapting this to the single-stage blower. What I figured is that by having the rubber flap fill the small space between impeller and housing, it would help prevent stones from getting caught in there.

Here are some pictures of the mod. I would have done a neater job if it wasn't 10 degrees outside!

We've got snow forecast for Tuesday/Wednesday so I may get to see how it works.

Wow I guess that impeller was taking some serious damage alright.

Looks good - I can't tell if there are lock washers on those bolts but be careful. If they come off they can shoot out the front and not necessarily out the chute.

Look forward to an update on performance after the storm.

Hello. yeah, I did the same thing for snowblower:

Now, the problem is, after two storms, the rubber got worn away. I guess with the auger being in constant contact with the cement, it just chews the ruber away.

Now, I have the done the same mod on a walkbehind two stage and had great results and the paddles lasted all winter. MY theory is that the paddles inside the snowblower once worn to the perfect lenght, will stay like that. On a single stage, since we are always ajusting the hieght of the blower, the paddles can;t stay at the same hieght..

Now, if you can figure out how the guys on youtube with a single stage BCS snowblower was able to keep it working, let me know!

We got about a foot of snow today so I got to try out the modification.

It seems to have made the thrower shoot the snow farther but that could be because of how worn the blades were to start. It didn't clog as much and I didn't hear any stones getting caught in the shoot.

Because of my gravel driveway, I keep the snowblower wheels adjusted to the 2nd highest setting so there was no wear of the rubber flaps from contact with the ground.

I wish I had a cab though, I get covered in snow everytime I use it!

Glad to see it worked out great for you. Let us know how long it lasts on a gravel drive. I wander if it will last differently than a cement drive. Hmm.

Great Mod! I have the same problem. It has torn the center auger like yours. I am going to try it. Keep us posted on how it is working for your thrower.

Just an update.

The rubber flaps are still there and working fine but while widening my snowbanks for the next storm, I picked up another rock but this time it lodged between the side plate and the end of the auger. It bent the auger back and caught the idler sprocket for the chain, locking the auger in place! My next job is heating up the auger and straighting out the bend.

I really have to look at getting my driveway paved, though at 600 feet, it's not cheap and I do like the look of a gravel driveway.
