Another HY-2 hydraulic question...

Anyone know what fluid is reccomended for use in this system? Can you use regular motor oil as in the other hydro/ hydraulic systems?

What would be least affected by the fluid heating up?

The manual says, in bold type, use wheel horse oil, part #4822 only. I don't know if that is an oil such as engine oil, or a hydro fluid. The manual for my Charger 9 says to use type A transmission "oil", what used to be called Transmission oil is now called transmission fluid, but type A is no longer made. Dexron II can be used instead. I have had to add fluid to my HY-2 and use a lighter viscosity hydraulic fluid. It doesn't seem to have hurt it.

I'm sure one of the many other much more well educated guys can answer us both.

I don't know if that's what is SUPPOSED to be in it, but the guy I bought the tractor from thought it would be good because of the seal conditioner. Other than a very small leak at the cylinder seal, the system seems to work fine.

I would imagine hydraulic jack oil would work too. :whistle:

Searched before I posted and found this thread. Has anyone found out anymore information as to what is the proper fluid to use in the HY-2? I am leaning to hydraulic jack oil. On the other hand, what TT said about the ATF and it's seal conditioner makes sense too.

Just a few days ago I noticed that the instructions for installing the HY-3 refers to the part #4822 as hydraulic fluid. I still don't know if it was high, med., or low viscosity though. I also like the seal conditioner thought TT.

All of my pumps on 953's/1054's (same as hy-2 or hy-3) have ATF in them... is it right???? I don't know---but it works and I think it would be better than jack oil that might not stand up to heat.

Went to the hydraulics shop to get two news hoses made for the HY-2. Showed the manual and asked about what fluid to use. He recommended using the ATF. He said the hydraulic jack oil is not really designed to take the high temperatures that the pump will develope.

Hey Jim in KY...I still buy Type A tuff.....from MFA Oil CO....just bought a case of it last year and it is still a standard product....farmers still use it so guess that is why they still carry it....at least Type A is what it is labeled as....Frank in MO :omg:

I would suspect in addition to temperature resistance the other important properies would be non-foaming and resistance to cavitation.

I run plain hydraulic fluid in mine. I have run it for several hours at a time with the pump getting pretty hot, but I've had no problems with the hydro fluid foaming or loosing performance after getting hot. But I do think I may switch to power steering fluid if I ever open it up again. I like the idea of the seal conditioners in the PSF.

I know this is an old thread, but my question is relevant to the topic at hand here.

 

I have to open up my HY-3 to reseal it, and I will be replacing the fluid at that time. Based on what is in here, is it safe to say that DEX II/III is safe to use?

 

If so I'd really rather use that since I buy it in bulk as all of my vehicle transmissions and PS systems us it.

I have been running Dextron in the pump on my 953 for years with no problem. It is the same as the HY-2.

OK, I just wanted to make sure. I know that not all hydraulic systems can stand up to ATF. My father in law ruined one of his best floor jacks by topping it off with ATF because his neighbor said it would be OK, make the leak 10X worse.
