Round hood project

Recommended Posts

Kelly

Well I started this project in late Oct. but it got pushed aside with other things going on, then the holidays, but I'm back on it, to start this was given to me by my Uncle just before he passed away, he knew I would do something with it, he picked it up a year or so before he died and it just sat in the barn, then I brought it home and it sat for a year, I decided to do something with it this fall, to start this is not a restore or even close, I'm replacing everything that is worn or broken, it will not get sand blasted, but cleaned up and spray bombed with rustoleum regal red, I will be using this as a work tractor, it's a 633 with lots of other parts mixed in, and kinda ruff, the trans is froze solid, rusted not cold, the steering was shot it would not turn at all, just the steering wheel spining around, the engine would not turn over, like I said on the ruff side, to start I picked out a good running 8hp Kohler from the stock pile to put in it, but it has a newer replacement 8hp Kohler in it, so I pulled the head to see why it would not turn over? well after pulling the head I find the engine looks like new inside, still nice cross hatch on the cyl. almost no carbon, but would not turn over, so I pulled the blower tin, to find the starter gear was jambed in the flywheel so I swapped starters, put the head back on, put a new set of points in it, hooked up a plastic tank I use to start engines, and it runs like a top, so I'm going to use this engine, but I'm going to swap a starter/gen. to it to look more correct, and I just like them, well here is what I started with.

Looks like a fun project. I'd guess the front axle and wheels were not on this one when you started? :banghead:

yup it's the 8 speed from a C-81 to replace the junk 3 speed, that is the part that did not come from this unit, I had to weld two cracks in the frame up, I V'd them out both sides and welded them, I didn't add anything because someday it might get a real restore, I will put large washers on it also.

100_3081.jpg

all ground down, I cleaned the holes up after the picture.

100_3082.jpg

then I ran a sander over the frame, again I'm just doing a quick job, focusing on repairs, and it wasn't real rusty.

100_3086.jpg

after a quick coat of rust oleum, not to bad so far.

100_3087.jpg

also painted the trans and steering but no pictures, I'm not good at taking them, I get busy and forget, so pic's are going to be kinda slim.

I got it back on it's feet, setting it up to make a new lower steering shaft, the old one the holes the roll pins fit through looked more like slots, I need to make a new pin for the front axle also, it was worn, the axle fit's nice on a new piece of bar stock so I know the axle is fine, same with the holes in the frame it rides in they are nice, again not many pictures, well only one really :banghead: more to come later.

Well I took all the rest of the tin, and other parts to a buddys to sand and prep for paint, again NO sand blasting, just a quick clean up, and coat with paint, not even primer, I grabed another hood to use because this one had a spilt seam, not that I can't fix it, but it is a 854/754 hood and they are hard to come by and I want to take my time to repair it right, I have a ruff 753 hood to use, it is so rusty that the grille bars are almost rusted though, but it will work for this project, I'm using a round seat pan because I have a new cover for one, I preped the two piece gas tank, it was very clean and not broken, I bought a new gasket, but I also bought a gas tank sealer kit made by POR-15 I like their other products so I tried it, I'll let you know how it works, it went good using the kit, I just need to see how it holds up, everything is painted, no pictures of that, but heres parts about ready to paint.

100_3142.jpg

Engine painted about ready to go in.

100_3175.jpg

I'm adding a factory HY kit to this also, I have the hyd. cyl. all rebuilt, the pump will be soon.

Got some more done, first don't drop a cast iron part when it's below 0 out they break, but after it broke I seen it had a rust line so it was cracked, the fresh rust is from setting outside for a few days, I have a few extra parts tractors, but this part is only used on 1963 tractors, it's the piece the tie rods bolt to on the lower steering shaft, and when I looked at my parts tractors I only had one good one, but I only need one so I'm set.

100_3215.jpg

I put the dash tower on to drill the hole for the high low shifter, I didn't do it before I painted it, I just touched it up, I cut up a high low shifter from a C series, I re threaded one end and re welded it at a slight angle to help clear the HY pump, here's the shifter cut up.

100_3146.jpg

and re welded

100_3147.jpg

and the final test fit, I found a smaller knob to use after this picture.

100_3158.jpg

with the small knob and painted.

100_3165.jpg

Then I needed to make a brake rod for the 8 speed conversion, so I bent up a C series rod fits nice till you try to put the side cover on :banghead: so off to the barn to find something else to use, I found a raider brake rod, and guess what it fits with no mods at all  to bad I spent 20 min. making the other one.

100_3159.jpg

Raider brake rod

100_3160.jpg

Tank, seat, steering, fenders etc.... all on, coming together at this point.
