C Series brake linkage

Recommended Posts

I'm just in the process of putting my C-101 back together after overhauling the transmission.

I've carefully stripped and painted the brake linkage as well as the clutch crank linkage.

When I have put them together I'm not happy with the way the clutch spring rubs on the brake band link. It's a pretty trivial hook up and it looks impossible to get wrong....

Can anyone confirm that they do actually touch from the factory? There isn't any room to shim or bend any of the linkage in order to prevent this.

thanks

Yes they do, not much you can do about it, put a rubber or plastic sleeve over the spring?

I just keep a little grease on the contact point, and don't worry about it until it starts squeaking again. Time for more grease!

I have noticed the same issue while dismantling mine. I may have a solution, but I've only drawn up an outline for a small Clevis Type piece that will extend out about 3/4" from the Web on the Tranny. It will be retained through the original 'Reamed' Spring Hole with an H.T Bolt.

This should then offer Spring Clearance, while not affecting any attachment to the Tranny Axle Casing i.e. Plow Frame.

I'm no way near setting this up yet, but I'll post it when I do.

Regards

Here is what I did to solve that problem. I took the clutch spring and bent the hook 180 degrees.

Spring before:

Spring after:

This way, you insert the hook into the clutch arm so that the spring body is away from the brake rod. Then hook the other end into the hole in the axle housing as normal. You should have a gap of at least 1/8" between the spring and the rod.

both look like good ideas, I had actually thought of drilling another hole in the gearbox casting or just bolting a small piece of angle into the corner in order to move the hole out 1/4".

heres what I did to improve but not fix entirely, but at least it doesn't squeal the same

I drilled a hole further out to improve clearance, however as I used a screw driver to help me unhook the spring the end snapped off!!! :banghead:

So now I have had to form a new hook temporarily until I get a replacement.
