Crushing my $2200 HDTV

Recommended Posts

Coadster32

Well, here is a couple of short videos of me and my nephew smashing up my Samsung 46inch DLP TV. This thing cost me $2200 when I bought it, and now would cost me $800 to fix it. (I bought a new tv instead). I tried to sell it but it wouldn't sell.

My nephew rides a 70's Craftsman Suburban, 10hp-8speed. Aftere we collided, I pushed him like he wasn't even there. :ychain:

Good way of releasing the frustration of a $2200 HDTV only lasting a few years! Smashing things is way under rated HA HA!

Great video, Chris. :ychain: I think I finally met someone crazier than Duke. :D Smashing his Blackberry was only small potatoes compared to your TV. :hide: After him looking at your video, I think we will see a fully automated Sluggo in Dukes future. :D

Oh my gosh, you have no idea how much that warms my heart!!! :hide:

I too purchased a Samsung DLP TV...50"....for about the same money. It lived just beyond the 1 year warranty (about 14 mo) then the main circuit board died. I was told the same thing...probably about $800 to fix it. (It still had the original batteries in the remote.) I raised hell with Samsung, but they didn't really give a rat's a*s about me or my problems.

I thought I was something when I watched it smash on the floor of the giant compactor at the land fill drop-off, but you, Coadster, are DA' MAN!!! I SALUTE YOU SIR!!!!

:banghead::thumbs: :ROTF:

We are not alone. They were on a verge of a class-action lawsuit for this issue. They still make great tv's but really messed up big on this one.

That's a good idea Ken. I know nothing will become of it, but at least to say I forwarded it to them, I could go to bed with a little dignity, and smirk on my face. :banghead:

Another TV company may pay big money for that footage for their next advertisement..You should send it to the other companies. Maybe you and your Wheel horse could be famous...

Sadly, with a little more research, that issue could have been resolved by replacing a ventilation fan and $30 worth of components. I have friends who have removed the backs of their dead DLP's to find the ventilation fan completely clogged full of hairs and dust, everything that gets kicked up while the TV is on during vacuuming of the house. We fixed a non starter a year or so back with a fan and 3 power supply caps that didn't like their hotter environment after the fan jammed. A simple repair actually. Sorry I didn't see this thread 2 years ago when it happened.

Chuck,

Don't feel bad, that's the first thing I bought. Cleaned it up everything really good, but it still didn't work. I got the schematic, and tested it all out the best I could. All the boards were getting power, but the main board was apparently shot. It was a common problem with that TV. Wonder not why they don't make them anymore.

It would have been a little messier if you used a blower, just sayin. :ychain:

The one we worked on had obvious bulging of the capacitors on the power supply board. I think we replaced two large caps and two small ones amounting to about $25 total.

Another trick to consider is applying a little pressure to the integrated circuits on the boards. With the advent of "super chips", manufacturers do not push components thru the pc board and solder - now they solder the legs of the chips to the same side of the board. Circuit boards will flex with cold / hot cycles and eventually a solder joint will break and the TV fails. Applying a bit of pressure to the "chip" will sometimes isolate the offending chip by allowing the bad solder joint to heal temporarily and the TV springs back to life. A quick touch with a soldering iron or judicious application of hot air from a heat gun to the broken solder joint will fix the issues.

I had taken to fixing IPods years ago when my kids were still in high school. Anytime one of their friends left the Ipod in their rear pants pocket and sat down, my kids brought home yet another project for me. After re-soldering the broken connections, the sweet tunes continued.

You could have shot into the back of a wagon like the tree service dudes do with their chippers of the farmers do with their combines! :)

Yeah, I have one like that. A couple of years ago it started turning off after about 10 or 15 minutes of use. I checked everything I could think of and even replaced the lamp. No luck. Finally, I took out every circuit board and cleaned the connectors. I put it back together and it's been humming along nicely for the past two years. I enjoy the picture even though I don't watch much tv at all. My friend who fixes tv's as a sideline told me to dump it and get a new one. I just couldn't bring myself to buy another foreign made tv, so I decided to keep this one I had going as long as possible. It's been almost 10 years now.

Too bad they don't make tv's in the US anymore.

Awesome!

I had some fun with box fans about a month ago. One wouldn't die after stabbing it several times in the motor area with a digging bar. Golf club did some damage to the untouched ones too!

On a side not to crushing the tv....I tried the same technique on an old microwave...(Don't ask). Anyway, I think the microwave actually won. :hide:
