Hood ornament fasteners

Recommended Posts

Horse'n Around

Howdy,

I bought a hood ornament for my Raider to replace the broken one. What do you all secure them with? I dont have the origional screw on fasteners that they came with. When I was a bodyman I had a magic "junk" drawer full of hex head fasteners among other treasures for the old die cast emblems but all those goodies are long gone. I can always go buy a box of those but I was wondering what you all use on yours. They have the flat push on type at Ace but they dont pull the ornament down snug to the hood and one of my priorities on the Raider has been ridding it of the rattles that it came with. Ive got the rattles all cleared up with the exception of the rattle that eminates from where the PTO rod passes thru the bolt on plate on the tower that has the detents in it. But I dont know how im going to be able to quiet that one down so Ill live with it if need be :ychain:

What do Yall use on the ornament?

John

Check your local NAPA... They have a HUGE assortment of fasteners and clips. JB

The orig. style is the push on, but they also had a thick rubber washer that helped take up the slack.

Try using a thick piece of clear polythene as a gasket. Cut it to the shape of the Ornament base and the 2 pin holes. Lay it on the Hood before fitting the Ornament.

I used this on my Raider with the original retainers, but my 74 Raider will have the Ornament Pins threaded to take brass nuts and shakeproof washers and the top Gasket. A small amount of silicone sealant around the holes and pins also prevents movement, water ingress and subsequently rust. Some clear wax polish around the base of the Ornament seals it from the top. Then I can forget about it...for the rest of my life. :ychain:

Oh ! and as for your vibration on the PTO Rod -

I used a section of PVC Cable Sleeving a tad smaller than the diameter of the Rod warmed it, then stetched it. With a bit of silicone oil, I slid it along the Rod (Knob removed) to where it passes through the Selector Plate.

It allows Rod movement in the plate and stops the Rattle when in the Slots and no Metal to Paint wear.

Thank you all so much for the help in getting the fasteners. I got tried of looking at those 2 holes in the hood, now I can get the ornament back on. On top of finding a source for the fasteners, thanks to Richard I have the means to rid myself of that last rattle on the PTO rod. Little by little its coming along. I couldnt have got this far this fast without all your help. The same holds true for my 702's, :ychain: for all the help and advise.
