trettig 0 #1 Posted December 9, 2010 I just picked up a RJ 58 and the transmission is frozen. How do I open it or at lease try to free it up? Give me some info on starting the process of trying to figure out how to make the thing work. Tom
MikesRJ 552 #2 Posted December 9, 2010 Here's the manual, and the model number is 5003. You'll find the instruction on pages 7-13 in the PDF. If it is froze you are better off disassembling the transmission and cleaning everything thoroughly. If you split the tranny, understand that you will, at the very least, need axle seals and a gasket set. The axle seals are rather hard to come by these days, but are still available. Good luck. http://www.mywheelhorse.com/graphics/file/...1958_-_1982.pdf
trettig 0 #3 Posted December 9, 2010 Thanks for your info. Any suggestions for where I could get axle seals and a gasket set?
VinsRJ 722 #4 Posted December 9, 2010 With a frozen RJ tranny you are looking at minimum new bearings and seals. If its a ealy production tranny the axel seals are pressed into the axel tube, later production trannies had seals which press on the exterior of the axel tube. The inner style axel seals and the brake shaft/input shaft seals can be had at any local bearing shop or NAPA auto parts store. The exterrior style axel seal will have to be sourced through Toro or local power equipment outlet with the Toro part #. I'm currently at work, so PM me and when I get home I'll provide you with all of the part numbers you will need.
MikesRJ 552 #5 Posted December 9, 2010 In the mean time here's some numbers and charts. These original part numbers cross over to new numbers and current manufacturers numbers. I'll update this post as I locate the charts. VinsRJ will fill you in on the rest. The bearings are as follows: 3 ea : WH-PN: 1502 : 3/4 ID x 1-5/8 OD x 3/8 Wide 3 ea : WH-PN: 1519 : 3/4 ID x 1-5/8 OD x 5/16 Wide (Standard, non-sealed R12 bearing) The Oil Seals are as follows: 2 ea : Axle Oil Seal : WH-PN: 1234 supersedes to TORO PN: 83-2830 1 ea : Brake Shaft Oil Seal : WH-PN: 1257 supersedes to TORO PN: 100441 The Gaskets are as follows: 2 ea : Gasket, Transmission : WH-PN: 3536 Two charts I have: http://www.mywheelhorse.com/graphics/file/...eals-Oil-WH.pdf http://www.mywheelhorse.com/graphics/file/...ssReference.pdf RJ-58 Manual: http://www.mywheelhorse.com/graphics/file/...ayJr_OM&IPL.pdf
ricksrj58 273 #6 Posted December 9, 2010 while you have the tranny opened up it would be a good idea to replace the bronze bearings in the axel tubes and the ring gear. ref # 94 part# 1517 and ref#95 part # 1503
kpinnc 12,442 #7 Posted December 9, 2010 I just picked up a RJ 58 and the transmission is frozen. How do I open it or at lease try to free it up? Before I opened it up, I would check to see if the brake band was rusted to the drum. I have found several that way, and it always appeared the tranny was locked up. You never know- You may get lucky and not have to take it all apart. Good luck!
