CTPATRIOT 12 #1 Posted December 8, 2010 I have some John Deere's a 140,318 and 400.They have very beefy overbuilt frames and are like tanks.I like the simple angle iron frame on the Wheel Horse, such a simple design.Just curious,do they ever brake???
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,330 #2 Posted December 8, 2010 I think the weak point (if you can call them weak) are the flange that bolts to the tranny has been know to crack and also the cross roundbar that holds up the front of the footboards. That weld can break. It broke the weld on my 520HC but I have to say I really tested it with the 3 point hitches.
Indy w h 5 #3 Posted December 8, 2010 The only weak point is were the trans bolts to the frame. Other than that there built pretty good Indy
sorekiwi 761 #4 Posted December 8, 2010 Like Steve said, the rear transmission mount sometimes cracks, mainly on the older frames, the factory added some doublers here on the later models. I have seen a couple broken above the cross tube on the front. The frame is notched out here for the crosstube. They should have drilled a hole instead. 520-H: (the crack has been welded)
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #5 Posted December 8, 2010 I also had/have John Deeres. I had a couple of the 200 series garden tractors and a '66 round fender 110. All had significant sized frames on them. Currently I have a JD 445 which has a very robust frame, even thicker and bigger than the 200 series I've own. Now, on Wheel Horse frames, they used an angle iron and the wall thickness is pretty thick. I can't go out and measure the thickness, but it seems like it was either 1/4 inches or 3/8 - can't remember. But it was thick. Some of the manufacturers today like to boast the gauge thickness of things, i.e. deck and even frames. Simplicity and Cub Cadet are two that I've seen advertise frame thickness, 7 gauge for one particular Simplicity model and a 9 gauge for Cub Cadet. Now, as most here know, the lower the gauge number the thicker the steel. But there are some here who may not know what those numbers signify in the "real" world. 7 gauge steel is under 3/16 or more precise, .1793 thick. 9 gauge is under .15 inch thick. Both of those numbers are less than what the Wheel Horse angle wall thickness is. So....... See this chart for sizes: http://www.engineersedge.com/gauge.htm
mr.pipes 4 #6 Posted December 9, 2010 It broke the weld on my 520HC but I have to say I really tested it with the 3 point hitches. Not to get off topic but I am a little ADD. What is the situation with the 3pt? Is it still back to the drawing board? Any updates? Oh yeah, and a little nosey too sometimes.

kpinnc 12,056 #16 Posted May 7, 2021 I can't remember the year, but later model horses came with a reinforcement across the bottom bolts of the tranny mount. My 87 doesn't have it, but my 91 does.
