857 rebuild

I think they hadnt invented the dipstick yet Denny!

I think where the dipstick tube is on the later models is really close to being under the centre console. You can make it fit, but you have to cut a hole in the console. The added double female fitting on the bottom fill plug is to allow for the extra oil needed.

The lube recommendations manual states 2 Qts (90-140 wt)

Thanks Mike, again. I didn't know there was a lube recommendation manual, guess I better look in the files.

Denny, like your rebuild but was wondering were you found new blades for your mower deck? I've looked forever and can't find any new or any good used blades, left or right, for my 32" deck.

Terry, you can find them on ebay for the 32" deck pretty often.

I have $75.00 in the 36" blades that I bought for this project Scott. If I remember correctly that's more than I paid for the extra three blade set I have for my 54" kubota deck but don't tell my wife that. :banghead:

I haven't tried buying any in a while, but the blade set part numbers are 8777 for the 32" decks and 8014 for the 36" decks.

I got the engine cleaned up and painted and the gearbox for the sickle bar rebuilt and painted. Next I need to replace this tranny with the six speed and repaint a few engine pieces I messed up. There's still a long way to go but I think I have most of the parts on hand to finish this.

Denny, my hat is off to you on this restore. All of us do varying levels of restoration, but this has to be one of the most thorough jobs I have ever seen. Your transmission work alone is incredible. When you finish the tractor, it's basically going to be brand new.

I look forward to the rest of the pictures of this project!

Bob, the short block on this was really clean, I don't think it was used much after it was installed. I just sprayed it with decal and paint stripper then used a small brush. The head, oil pan and the tins I glass beaded.

I just got the last of the decals for my SMS425 sickle bar that I will be putting on this tractor. Ordered them from Terry less than three days ago and they are already in my hand, you can't ask for better service than that. Thank you Terry! outstanding quality as usual. I also got a few of the new Redsquare decals, They are Nice! Terry, I believe these four decals make up a complete set for the SMS425 sickle bar and probably other models as well.
