cletus 0 #1 Posted October 17, 2010 read somewhere i need to use 40w in my lawnranger l-107 trans.is this too thin and the reason my seals are leaking?what is the heaviest oil i can reasonably use
pfrederi 17,866 #2 Posted October 18, 2010 The 40w motor oil was the original WH spec for the L-107. WH later changed the spec to 90-140 GL5 gear oil. My L-107 has used the 40w since she was new and shifts smoothly (especially in the winter) and doesn't leak. Seal leakage is due to seal wear or play in the axle shaft not the viscosity of your trans lubricant.
hcminis 1,557 #3 Posted October 18, 2010 hmmm...so I have an L 157..is it suppose to have the 90w or the 40w? New to this tranny stuff and sorry for the repetitive question.
pfrederi 17,866 #4 Posted October 18, 2010 Current WH spec is 90-140. That said I have had no problems with the original recommendation of 40w, after 40+years. My bottom line...keep the water out and do not worry about the viscosity.
