Does my hydro have a problem?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have a short but fairly steep hill in front of my house and my tractor seems to roll down it and then at the bottom of the hill the tractor seems to hesitate for a sec before the drive catches back up. The tractor is a C121 that I do most of my mowing and I have picked up a blade and blower for when the snow comes again. So I am trying to make sure there is nothing I need to worry, watch or fix before the snow starts falling. Thanks for any insight you may have as this is my first hydro and I am not sure what it should and shouldn't be doing, Chris.

when you say roll down the hill you mean speed up then it slows back down then the tractor pulls along again and does not freewheel

Yes, when going down a hill it speeds up until the bottom then at the bottom it seems to sit there for a second like it is catching up and then it starts to move again.

Could be a worn drive belt. Does it loose speed on steep hills, going up, or when its hot after working it awhile?

It doesn't miss a beat going up a hill, it is really strong, it just seems to coast down them, and that makes me worry little like something is wearing or broken or possibly wrong. It will do the coasting whether it is hot or cold.

Maybe a dumb question but does it do the same thing in reverse?? If it does then the pump or motor might be missing a step. If it holds then maybe there is a directional ball valve that needs cleaned. Couldn't tell you how to do that though or even if there is such a thing.

I am not sure if it rolls down in reverse or not, I can fire it up tomorrow and see if does roll down faster in reverse.

How fast does it speed up? Just a little or out of control fast? If it is just a little that is normal. The hydro trannies don't have the holding power like the manual ones. They speed up a bit and when you level out or start climbing they catch back up. Atleast that's my experience with them.

The tractor does not go out of control, but the hill is really short . I am glad to hear that someone thinks it is normal. I have no problem with lack of or losing power over time so I was/am hoping there is nothing wrong. Thanks for the reply and thoughts, Chris.
