closha63 0 #1 Posted October 16, 2010 Ok welp i have a 70's Charger 12. I finally got the mower deck on and was mowing. I parked on the pavement and noticed that the trans. was leaking from the... welp a couple places.. I am wondering if these trans. are hard to reseal? Also what type of fluid do i want to use and how much? Also the trans. fluid filter... whats a part number on that? Any help would be awesome.... HankB 16 #3 Posted October 17, 2010 I think all Chargers are autos. And I think that the Chargers of that age used the Sundstrand autos and IIRC before about '72 they used ATF from the factory. Check the fluid on the dipstick to see if it looks red (ATF) or amber (engine oil.) The ATF used was Type F (now Dexron II or III.) Engine oil was 10W-30 or 10W-40. WH put out a bulletin with instructions for converting an older trans from ATF to engine oil - you need to get all of the ATF out. I suggest going to a small engine/lawnmower shop to find the filter. I think they are different from auto oil filters even though one will screw on. There should be a dipstick under the seat to check trans oil level. Hard to determine what it will take to reseal without knowing where it is leaking. I've heard of lots of folks looking for hoses so I would look at those first. They're rubber and subject to deterioration. I also recall that you can get replacements made at any competent hydraulic shop. Another possible leak spot is the lift cylinder. B-8074 19 #4 Posted October 17, 2010 My 69 Charger is a Sundstrand, it will take about 5 quarts to fill it up. As for the fluid, like Hank said make sure what it is. As for the type, if it is still ATF you will be able to use a good DEX/MERC. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
closha63 0 #5 Posted October 17, 2010 Well checking the dipstick i found nothing on it. But it is leaking good and the fluid that came from the drain hole was really dark so yeah. I do think that it is ATF though. Whats better to use though. And if i went with OIL how do you drain the ATF? And i don't have a lift cylinder. Wish i did so if anyone has one for sale at a decent price. And i will try and post so pics up later i don't know how so i will have my wife do that..... TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #7 Posted October 20, 2010 From the "links" section here at RedSquare: http://www.bjhydraulics.com/ It's been a while since I have personally ordered anything from them, but I hear they're still capable of supplying both Sundstrand and Eaton parts. The only invoice I could find was from 1995 and the part number for the seal kit for a Hydro-Gear unit was BJH-BJ99890. You're going to need to wash down the entire unit, let it dry, and then run it to find exactly where it's leaking. More than likely, the seal for the direction control shaft (top "front" of the pump - behind the nylon cam plate) will be a major source.
