dex/merc ATF ok for early hydro trans?

Recommended Posts

JUSS10

i recently got a GT-14 and am changing all the fluids to make sure everything is good as it sat for 5 years with no use. the tranny says type A which i know isnt easy to find anymore. i did some searching on here but just want to verify that dextron 3 or the dex/merc fluid you buy at the store is ok to put in this transmission. thanks

Justin

Type A changed to FA to F. It is the Ford ATF.

Yep...which became Dexron, which became Dexron II, which became Dexron III.

I learned this, Justin, because about 2 months ago I had the same "problem" you found when my GT-14 blew a hose and lost about half it's fluid. I just went ahead and changed it out along with the filter...but never did find Type A. Dexron III is working just fine.

Not trying to rain on your parade, Pumper...just didn't know if Justin was as old and remembered all the history as I am!

I'm just glad we've got a few young'uns who still see the beauty in these old but tough tractors! Hang in there, Justin! You've got a great life ahead of you!

By the way, I love your website! Pretty cool stuff, there!

Uh,... Nope.

Type A was a friction modified type used by GM. It eventually evolved in the Dexron line. Type F was a NON friction modified fluid used by Ford. Ford's fluids have evolved but types F and FA ARE NOT compatible with Mercon.

Wheel Horse updated their lube charts to show Dexron III in place of type A. Dexron VI can also be used. You may have seen Dexron III/Mercon. It is not exactly the same as either Dexron II or Mercon, but can be used in place of either. However, it should NOT be used in place of Types F or FA.

Type A can still be found at some farm stores since so many older tractors used it.

BTW, type F came before Type FA.

I have used Amsoil synthetic trans fluid in mine for 5 years. Have had no problems and runs cooler too!
