416-8 Trans input shaft seal leak

Recommended Posts

Is the input shaft seal replaceable from the outside or do I split the case and what is the CORRECT weight gear oil to use? I think some one put in 80/90 when it was supposed to be a thicker oil.

I believe the "Correct" is 90-140. I use 80-90 because I have a lot of it on hand. I am also still using 40w motor oil in the transmission on my L-107. (That was the original WH recommended for it (since changed I guess). But it has run all its 43 years with that grade oil (changed maybe 3 times) and it runs smoothly quietly and doesn't leak a drop. Bottom line keep the water out, change it every decade and do not obsess over the weight.

Seal can be replaced from the outside.
