plastic welder

I was just wondering if anyone has used a plastic welder in the past?

I'a msure this has been covered in the past! But search isn't getin' it!

How well do these things work? Is it worth the time experimenting?

Have used Devcon with good results before!

But I see Harbor Freight offers a "Plastc welder" cheap!

Any info? Thanks!

Save Old Iron

Bud,

I bought one several years back and have only used it 2 or three times on some automotive panels.

Works great if you develop a great technique. Just like metal welding.

If you want to try before you buy, let me know, I might be able to mail this one out to you for a try. You will need a compressor to supply the airflow. Some of the newer units have a self contained air pump in them

let me know

Chuck,

Thats exactly what I'am talking about!

Can get one for less than $40 bucks now! At HF!

Something to add to my "carpet baggers" list of tricks!

If you think it's worth while I'll buy one!

Bud, i have several plastic welders that work well. Back in the day that was about all we had to mend plastics. Biggest problem is identifying the type of plastic your dealing with and choosing the correct rod. Chuck is spot on, there's a "knack" to this as far as heat and technique is concerned. You can get pretty good with it over time with practice and patience.

Over the years, 2k epoxies have all but replaced my use of plastic welding with a rod. There are times the welder comes in handy, especially to tack something back together from the backside, but most of the time, i find myself reaching for my Fusor gun, and using epoxy to put the pieces back together.

Good luck in your welding, it will be a great addition to your tool box! :)
