cletus 0 #1 Posted September 28, 2010 hi folks-first post!just got a l-107.1st and reverse gears are no problem but i cannot get 2nd or third -any suggestions please! by the way im lovin your forum here in the uk! :)
sorekiwi 761 #2 Posted September 29, 2010 :) Looks like we're getting over run by poms! 1st and Reverse are on the same shift rail, 2nd and 3rd are on the other one. What does the gearstick do when in the 2/3 gate? Is it locked? or will it move into the 2nd and 3rd positions? Probably the first thing I would do is pull out the gear stick and see if you can move the 2/3 rail with a big screwdriver. Also have a look at the bigger of the two balls on the gearstick and make sure it is retained securely. Then get back to us!
cletus 0 #3 Posted September 29, 2010 took out the gearstick-the oil is like mud -i drained it out and noticed some water in there too.gave it a quick flush out and refilled with new oil.i still cant seem to get into the second/third rail.i tried the big screwdriver in there but nothing seems to shift.i can still only get 1st and reverse what next? :)
stevasaurus 22,863 #4 Posted September 29, 2010 How about a little history on the tractor. Has it been sitting for some time? Did you just get it? Did it run before? etc. Some pictures would help...I do not know what a 1-107 is...so as to know what kind of transmission you have there. You have a better chance of the bearings being OK if the horse was sitting rather then running it with the water and gunk in it. and by the way... :USA:
Lane Ranger 10,992 #5 Posted September 29, 2010 L1-7 should be the recoil start Lawn Ranger with a #5053 transmission which was used in quite a few tractors. That shifting fork could be stuck several ways but the screwdrive pushing the fork -now that you have new oil/fluid in the case should be possible with a little leverage on it. cletus 0 #6 Posted September 29, 2010 i have only just got it-think it has been sat for a long time.should i be trying to push screwdriver front to back or left to right and exactly what am i trying to move?sorry about so many questions!! :)
stevasaurus 22,863 #7 Posted September 29, 2010 Thanks Lane...it is an L-107...1967 with a 5053 It is section 2 of the manual that I have. Do you have a manual?? Cletus...it is important to have the trans in neutral before you start trying to move things around. not the best picture...but it shows the 2 forks in the neutral position. If you look down into the trans in the shifter hole, this is what you want to see. The fork on the passenger side or toward the back is the 1st and rev fork. The fork on the driver's side or toward the front is the 2nd and 3rd gears. Once in neutral then take the screw driver and try to move the fork on the driver's side either forward or backward. Use gentle pressure, if indeed it is stuck or rusted, then it is time to split the trans and clean it out...you may want to do that anyway. Let us know. :USA:

Lane Ranger 10,992 #10 Posted September 29, 2010 Check out wheelhorse.org The first group will have the operating manual for the L-107 and L-157 with a cutaway drawing of the transmission. I think Steve may be referring to the Wheel Horse Transmission manual which is also on that website. Click on The Red Square's Wheel Horse Tractors at the top of the page and then click on: Wheel Horse Links, Links to your favorite Wheel Horse sites WheelHorse .org is at the lower part of the list. You will have to join yahoo to access the free manuals and tons of other very good information. Also I have a cousin named Cletus -its a very good name! :)
sorekiwi 761 #11 Posted September 30, 2010 Hey Steve! - remember that in England that the passengers side is the drivers side and the drivers side is the passengers side Cletus, when you look down the hole you will see the 2 selector rails. Each has a square notch cut out of it. When the notches are lined up, the transmission is in neutral, and the little ball on the end of the gear stick can move to either rail. There's a good picture of them in Steves post, but they'll look a little different when you are peering through a 1" hole, and they are covered in a nasty oil/water mix... These rails slide side to side. The one closest to the front of the tractor is 1st and Reverse, the rear most one is 2nd/3rd. Put a big screwdriver or prybar in the notch and gently try to slide the rails left and right to select the respective gears. I'm suspecting the rail is rusted up and wont want to move, and that you will end up having to pull the tranny apart to fix it. One thing you could try is filling the trans with some sort of thin lubricant for a week or so. I have used a 50/50 mix of ATF and Kerosene. Fill it right up so the shifter rails are covered. Every day give the shift rails a nudge with your prybar to try and work the lube around. This might get it moving. You will probably also find that with the gearbox so full, and this thin mix, it will leak out the seals and make a mess on your floor. :USA:
stevasaurus 22,863 #12 Posted September 30, 2010 Dang Mike...I forgot that in the USA, we drive on the wrong side of the vehicle. :wh:

stevasaurus 22,863 #14 Posted September 30, 2010 sounds good, but you may want to still split the transmission and clean it out...not hard to do, and may save a couple of hundred pounds in new bearings and seals. After doing a couple of these, I am not a believer in running kerosene and draining them out and thinking you are OK. The splash method is just not a substitute for opening up the transmission and actually cleaning it out. Not when a $5.00 gasket and a gallon of mineral spirits can give you the piece of mind of what you really have. All I can say is do not be afraid to open up one of these transmissions, you will be surprised how easy they are to work on, and you have plenty of help here to make it through any thing you may come across. :wh:
