HankB 16 #2 Posted September 24, 2010 i feel a little stupid for asking this but There is no stupid question. But the possibility exists for stupid answers. For example: what is the diffrence between a 10 pinion and 8 pinion 2 pinions. Sorry I can't offer more, but I suspect the thread has no where else to go but up. -hank
stevasaurus 22,904 #4 Posted September 24, 2010 I agree with Heath...that's funny Hank.. Hank , I may be rubbing off on you. I have to be honest....I do not know the answer. :)
stevasaurus 22,904 #5 Posted September 24, 2010 i feel a little stupid for asking this but what is the diffrence between a 10 pinion and 8 pinion first... Hope you enjoy the humor...it has been a hot and long summer. Not sure there is really a difference except that which was stated. difference in the transmissions and years maybe. They would both be considered like "poise traction" I would think. I wish I knew, because I know your question was serious. the knowledge is here...please be patient. Thinking really no difference except size and/or weight of tractor. :wh:
mavfreak 11 #6 Posted September 24, 2010 may be one of our pullers would know. I think they like the 8 pinion for strength.

WheelHorse_of_course 99 #8 Posted September 24, 2010 The greater number of pinions make the system more heavy duty and better suited to heavy ground-engaging work. That said, wheel horse's are so heavy duty it may not matter much! :)
64s 83 #9 Posted September 24, 2010 I'm not an expert on the transmissions, but I'm 95% sure on my answer. The 10 pinions were posi and a bit weaker than the 8 pinion - I'm guessing because the pinions would have to be smaller to fit the extra two in there. From what I've read, pullers prefer the 8 pinion and 1 1/8" axles because they are the strongest Wheel Horse produced. I'm also assuming that the 4 pinion is still better than the 10 pinion as I've seen posts about the 10 pinion trani's blowing up on pulls. I hope I got some of this right????? sorekiwi 761 #10 Posted September 24, 2010 The 10 pinion was a limited slip unit (and was is probably the right word, as most are pretty worn out by now.) The 8 pinion was a standard "open" diff, that operates the same as the 4 pinion diff. 8 pinions are the strongest. which is why the pullers like them. There are also a few "spider gear" automtive type differentials out there, which are considered the weakest of all, but its the type I like the most. :)
