dkopp 1 #1 Posted August 31, 2010 Okay...I seen this thing the other day and could not figure out what it was. I know you guys can identify it. It's a hydro and looks to use the same type transaxle assembly that is used in the Case type tractors. It looks like it may have even had or could have a three point mounted on it. It's got the 15 or 16 inch rims on the rear and the engine sits inline on the frame. At first I thought it might be an old Sears but then thought that all the old sears had their engines mounted transverse in the frame.

dkopp 1 #3 Posted August 31, 2010 Thanks Perry! This one stumped me for a while. I did manage to find something out there that matched the rear fenders and console. I found this picture of a Dayton tractor and it looked pretty close but the front grill was not right. This picture matches the rear fenders but the grill looks to be just slightly different. The picture Perry posted matches the grill darn close, so I'd say that Perry hit the nail on the head. Does anyone know any history on this particular model. Who actually designed/built it? Thanks again Perry!
6wheeler 603 #4 Posted September 1, 2010 Perry is right, I believe MTD made it as well as alot of others, it was made when White Farm equipment actually got completely away from Oliver. The new GT's were made to look like the new White tractors. Often touted as the new age for farm tractors, John Deere came out with the 30 series farm tractors, and the mowers also followed suit with the 116's 214's etc. if you look at a 30 series farm tractors ie. 4230,4430 etc. you will see the resemblance. Same for White tractors ie. 2-85, 2-105 etc. I saw my first New white GT at Farm Fest in 1976, it was shiny, new, And, very cool to 15 year old. If its cheap...... Get it. Jim_M 178 #5 Posted September 1, 2010 Pat, White didn't exactly get away from Oliver, they bought them in 1969 and closed them up, and did the same with Minneapolis Moline. Jim
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,505 #6 Posted September 1, 2010 That Dayton is a MTD 990. The others are probably variants of the 990 or 998. I actually may pick up a '70's Farm King which is another variant of the MTD 990. Briggs cast iron engine, starter/generator, shaft driven hydrostatic transmission with high and low range, hydraulic lift, hydraulic 3 point hitch, big 15 inch rear rims with 27 inch tires. dkopp 1 #7 Posted September 1, 2010 I snuck a peak at the front grill and it is a White for sure (I walked around to the other side of the parking lot, should have done that in the first place). It looks to be a fairly solid tractor, minus a few panels. What really made this tractor look different is the thickness or depth of the area between the seat and dash, I've never seen one so deep at that point. This particular tractor is sitting on a back lot of an HVAC shop and has been for about a month now. The larger tires and engine placement really made it stand out. Were these tractors pretty good as far as drivetrain and reliability?
6wheeler 603 #8 Posted September 2, 2010 Jim, I stand corrected. I re read what I wrote and realized my error. It is funny to me that White did that to 2 fine equipment mfgs. and look where they are now. When I go to auctions now I laugh at how a 1650 Oliver or a 5 star or G 1000 Vista Moline will bring the same or more than a 4-180 White. Isn't that ironic? Anyway, back to the task at hand. I do think they are good tractors because my uncles neighbor bought one when he bought a new 2-105 White farm tractor. They were both ordered at the same time, some sort of package deal I suspect. The 2-105 is long gone, He still mows his yard with the GT. I told him 2 years ago, if he ever wants to get rid of it call me...... still waiting.
