15w40 oil?

Recommended Posts

First of all, I'm really sorry for starting an oil discussion. I hate them as much as you do i'm sure.

Wondering what oil I should put into my Kohler 12. I know that good old 30 wt is what they were designed to use but the new 15w40 diesel spec oils are very good. This engine has been bored once already (I believe .010 over) so I need it to last a long time.

What say you?

I use Amsoil 4 stroke small engine oil 10/30 which also lists as straight 30 wt.! Synthetics to me are cheap insurance.

As expensive as a complete Kohler rebuild can get ($400+) good oil is good insurance. I use 10w-30 Pennzoil. I change my oil twice during the summer months, hoping for longevity.

It's all personal preference. I believe that regular oil changes and maintenance is more important that the type of oil. I have used 5w40 synth in the winter months but since switched to the Rotella T 15w40 as almost every trucking and construction outfit I deal with uses it exclusively. The M10 motor runs real quiet on that stuff.

I use a good 15w40w diesel engine oil in my small engines. Makes me think of what the cub cadet dealer told grandpa 40 years ago. If it's good enough for the MACK truck it's good enough for the Kohler! He also said to blow the mower off every time they used it.
