first round hood restoration

That would look really cool if you could make the belt cover, I am partial to the middle one, that has the Horse Head.No matter what you do I know your tractor is going to come out fantastic!!!! BTW, dont feel bad about the price of your gallon of red paint, if you check into what a gallon of red automotive paint costs, well let me put it this way, you will probably have a stroke.Red pigments are extremely expensive to say the least. Ive only painted with regular automotive paint so Ive never had the opportunity to paint with Valspar but judging from really awesome quality of the paint jobs Ive seen in the pictures posted by folks tractors who have painted with it, in my opinion the price you paid is a really good value and I bet it turns out great too!

Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your progress with us all.

also tore the starter generator apart. one of the bearings cages fell out and before it fails i thought i better replace it. are both bearings the same? i have one that says 6203 and another that i think says 3203. any input would be great, and does napa or someone carry these?

and how close is IH white to the original "linen beige"?

thanks

got the new bearing for the starter generator so that will be back together. $12 vs the $100 i was quoted by the battery/starter shop in town. always makes you feel good when you fix it yourself.

any input on wheel color? i did some searching on here and see that a lot of people use a lot of different colors. just curious between IH white and cub cadet beige. if anyone could let me know which is closest thats what I'll do. I'm leaning towards the IH white.

hope to have some assembly pics by the end of the night

ok pictures! the wheels are a bit of an eye sore but i havent figured out what color to use on them yet. i'm leaning towards IH white. also, the tires aren't perfect but they are far from rotten. they didn't hold air so i tried to unscrew the valves but they just cracked off. i'm pretty sure the tubes are shot anyway. any tricks on popping the bead and then pulling it over the rim so i can pull the tube and put a new one in? i've removed and replaced tones of motorcycle tires and tubes but i tried my tire irons on these and they didn't seem to help much. got a few more parts primed and ready for paint so hopefully if its decent tomorrow we can lay down some more red paint. getting pretty excited to get thing finished

Hey its looking great! If it were mine I would paint the wheels an off white, like linen beige or wimbleton white. The white contrasts really well with the red. But whatever you do , as long as you like it, thats all that matters! Keep up the great work!

I wish I had an answer for you about which one is closer, but I am pretty sure that there was a recent thread about this, I will look and see if I can find it.

I found the topic, it is in the Paint, decal etc folder. Its its at the top of the page, it is a permanent subject, I dont know what the term is but its a great source of info on the paint end of things. Nylyon collected the info and posted it, it has the colors, codes etc for the reds as well as the white too. I would have just posted the link here but dont know how to do that. I actually printed the info and put it in my Wheel Horse 3 ring binder that I keep my Wheel Horse info and other important WH related stuff. Theres times when I see something on the computer and I know it will come in handy someday and by that time I will probably forget where I saw it so I just print it and put it in my binder. I hope this helps you with what your looking for.

The PPG is an automotive paint, they probably make paint for other uses but that wouldnt probably be of any help in this instance.. if you look for at places that cater to body and paint shops you should be able to find one that sells PPG products, there are many companies that make paint such as but not limited to Dupont, Sherwin Williams (Martin Senior automotive paint which some NAPAs sell is made my Sherwin Williams) etc. so basicly if your wanting PPG paint you would have to find a shop that sells the PPG because most Auto paint supply shops in my neck of the woods carry and specialize in one or maybe two brands.

The Duplicolor paint can be found at the larger autoparts stores like Pep Boys, Checker, Auto Zone, etc, and even Walmart carries some but it might be the real small bottles with a brush in the lid for touching up chips rather than the spray can paint. Just a few ideas to get you pointed in the right direction.

Justin, Good to see the green has turned to a respectable shade of red. We need to get that yellar gone asap. What I have been using and believe to be a good match is Case/IH Power White. I get it at a farm and home under the VanSickle label. It covers better than Omni paints that I use for the red, dries slow but is tougher than that yellow ever was. :D Mike

hmm we have a farm and family somewhat near by. i wonder if the valspar IH white would be close. its definitely not white when you compare it to the white paint that sits next to it on the shelf. i have a feeling this may just be a personal preference thing.

"i have a feeling this may just be a personal preference thing."

Theres nothing wrong with that. What ever brand and color you choose will look great! Working on our tractors is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, and therapeutic experience so dont feel like you need to drive yourself nuts looking for the perfect exact color match. Just find one that your happy with and enjoy

got a bit more painting done today.

also got the tires half off so i could pull the inner tubes. going to try and patch them up and see if i can get the old valves out.

if i can't save the tubes I'll just try and track down a set of tires and wheels. i really like the look of 23 x 8.5 turfs so maybe i can find a set for a fair price.

pictures of todays progress. it started getting hot and humid so i headed in but i was able to get the steering all installed and rewired everything. all the electronics work so thats great. got the motor tins on and starter/generator bolted on. this may be about as far as i get for a while cause i am leaving for north carolina for the week. that will give it some good time for the paint to fully dry at least.

its actually not as small as it looks. its around 8 gauge. been using it on my last tractor with no problems yet. if it shows up as a problem I'll get some custom ones made at the local battery shop.

Justin, I am using 6 ga. welding wire on all my "re-wires". It works really well and is very flexible. I buy it from Mc. Master Carr along with the terminals!!

Looks great though!!

Hey Justin that's a great job your doing, but I've got a queston for you. I'm restoring a 854 and I,m trying to find the plastic bushing that goes into the gas tank that the steering wheel shaft goes thru but not finding any solution for this. Are you going to use anything there and if so what is it. Keep up the great work and good luck.

Thanks Wingrider
