Gonna start powder coating some parts

Recommended Posts

I have always wanted to use powder coat but never had a way to bake it (wife would have killed me if I used the one in the kitchen). Well thanks to Craig's List I came up with an oven to bake some of the parts in. It runs on 120 vac and the inside dimensions are 24"x12"x12". Heats up to 450 degrees F. Not to bad for $20.00!

Keep the posts coming Jeff. I would like to know what color you end up with after the baking is done. I am interested in doing a little powder coating myself, but want someone else to be the guinea pig.

Great deal on the oven., but how are you going to get a hood in there? :D

The heating element is on the bottom. I'm just gonna cut a hole in the top and run a piece of round duct work out of it. Seeing as it runs on 120, it can just sit outside on the stand it came with (Not shown)

I was talking about a tractor hood, not a vent hood. :D

fireman, it looks like a great oven. I didn't realize you would have to vent it. I always thought I would just try a discarded kitchen oven. It would vent through one of the burners. Good luck. I am anxious to see how it goes.

Looks goos Jeff. I don't think you will have to vent the oven though.

Bob,

Though you were talking about an exhaust hood. I'll have to do some research to see if it really needs to be vented. The previous owner used it for pottery.

I guy once told me "if you can't see it from your house, it doesn't matter"

I have a garage heater that runs on natural gas. It is similar to the propane heater below. It is well over 100G BTUs. I have it tapped into to my NG line with a 25 foot Quick connect gas hose. So I do have enough length to move it outside.

My thoughts were to try it for powder coating. Take a 55 gallon drum OR a galvanized trash can and hang parts inside of it with wire and than lower it down over the heater several inches.

Well think it would work for powder coating?

To bake powder coat you need 300+ deg. so I'd say no on that heater.

jeff nice deal on the oven, I have a powder coat system but never used it yet.

My powder coater said they are coming out with alot more lower degree powders. He said they cost a little more but you don't have to use as much, gas , electricity ect. to heat them up. He did a yellow deck for me this spring with it but I haven't put it togesther yet. I will say it's alot more shiny. Almost looks like colored glass, Tom, Perry Ks.

Nice! Perhaps any chemical reaction smell might be best vented outside? :D

Powerd coating kicks butt. It is tough to get it out of threaded holes and stuff though. Do good masking. (or just P/C the whole thing together)

Interesting thread, please keep it updated as you get-r-done.

Does powder coat come in a wide variety of colors? I'm wondering how close the reds are to what we call "Wheel Horse red"? I would love to powder coat the shifter and shift pattern plate on the B-100. It seems to be the first thing to get chipped.

There are hundreds of colors out there now. I have found an "off-white" which is close to the original WH Linien wheel color so now all of my wheels and seats are coated. Less chipping and scratches.

My wheels were powder coated and they came out very nice. Great thing was, I had the tires mounted within 1 hour of the wheels being done. Can't do that with paint.
