Butch 194 #1 Posted July 19, 2010 I was thinking about buying a disc harrow for the garden I'm making. I have a Troy-bilt Pony tiller that I like but I figure I would just use that for the final prep. Can these things be raised by the PTO with a Clevis hitch or do you need one of those 3 point assembly SteveBo sells? I'm looking to use it with he C-175. Still getting use to the forward/reverse lever and the lifting/lowering lever! I have some ags to put o the back. Do these discs work very good? I'm doing and area about 25'x60' Thanks. Butch S. Butch 194 #3 Posted July 19, 2010 Butch, did you mean with the hyd lift? Rick Now let"s not get technical on me! Can my 175 lift the disc harrow somehow or do I have to run in circles like a Giboni? Butch S. Jersey
rickv1957 73 #4 Posted July 19, 2010 I would think that the hyd lift will handle the disc harrow just fine!,Rick
Butch 194 #5 Posted July 19, 2010 I would think that the hyd lift will handle the disc harrow just fine!,Rick Rick do I need an attachment like a clevis hitch or a belt or something? The only thing there now is like a tow hitch. Thanks. Butch S. Jersey

6wheeler 662 #8 Posted July 19, 2010 Butch, Yes you will need a clevis hitch. I personally don't think the disc harrows are that great, especially for breaking ground. They aren't heavy enough also, if they were tandem discs they would probably work nicer. I have a Brinly single gang and it works, IF the ground is somewhat soft and I put xtra weight on it. What you need is a moldboard plow, a disc, and a cultivator That way, you get to play with lots of stuff ( you know, plow first, then disc while the ground is soft then maybe disc again tomorrow, cuz it was so fun ) I wonder why I plant those stupid plants, Now I have to wait for the garden to be done so I can plow again Have fun Pat
MaineDad 85 #9 Posted July 20, 2010 Butch, A moldboard plow and tiller is really your best bet. The small single gang disc harrow I use needs a 13 year old daughter to stand on the back to dig in enough to be effective

I was hoping to only use the Troy-bilt tiller for the final prep. that's because the tractor is much more fun!! I even thought of getting a tiller for the WH. Butch S. mnWHfan 47 #13 Posted July 20, 2010 Hi Butch, Here is me using a mold board plow to put in a new garden. Dennis
Butch 194 #14 Posted July 20, 2010 Now that was pretty cool!! Both yards had rich, dark soil so it's been worked I would say. What makes the moldboard dig in like it does? It can't be the weight. Does the PTO provide the needed down force? So what would be the next step after this? I need to post some pics. But what I have done is torn the ground up real good with the tiller. Then I started to do some leveling with the mid mount plow. Then I pushed some high spots down and the deep decaying leaves were pushed onto the garden area in clumps. The biggest problem with the tiller is the stuff wrapping around the tines. A real PITA. I was looking to plant a winter rye in a week or two but can't seem to find it any where. Anymore info is appreciated. Even the videos!! Thanks. Butch S. Jersey
tgranthamfd 29 #15 Posted July 21, 2010 Butch, do a search for Brinly Hardy, on e-bay and look for the NorthernTool stuff. They are cheaper than what you had mentioned in the above post. Would still have to have a clevis hitch set up, though. I love those 2 videos and have watched them a couple of times. Haven't gotten a chance to get mine out and play, yet. I think momentum and the angle is what makes them dig in like they do. for sure though.
