tarcoleo 119 #26 Posted July 4, 2010 About the Wheel Horse "thing". Seems to me we need to differentiate people who are into WH's: 1) If you own one that is in good shape, that you maintain and run, you"re a "user". 2) If you own 2-5 that run and/or are being restored, you are a "hobbyist" and a "collector". 3) If you own more than 5 and keep them regardless of condition without significantly repairing or reconditioning any, you are a "hoarder". 4) If you have a junkyard with many tractors including WH's that you dismantle for parts and resale, you are a "salvager" or "scavenger". Guess I'm a no. 2 with two with three more to go! Tom in RI
MikesRJ 552 #27 Posted July 4, 2010 I think there needs to be one more division. If you have two I think we should call it "Breeder". Like rabbits, more a sure to follow.
Butch 194 #28 Posted July 4, 2010 Just because I have "any number of the same thing" doesn't mean I have a collection. I have many rolls of toilet paper that I buy in bulk at Sam's Club; am I a TP collector too? OK, maybe I do collect toilet paper but I try to use it before it has a chance to depreciate LOL. Actually you probably have a pretty good investment by buying the TP in bulk. The price of it ISN'T going to go down. The price of it will only go up with inflation or you'll be getting less on a roll and they'll keep the price the same. Plus you must figure in the cost of going to the store and buying it. If you buy a 6 month supply instead of a month supply you save yourself 5 trips to the store. I don't know what it costs today to drive a car per mile but 30 years ago it was 25 cents. Now where we shop it's 25 miles away. So that can ad up to some savings. So I think buying your TP in bulk is actually a better investment than taking your TP money and depositing it into savings at your local bank! Butch S. CasualObserver 3,408 #30 Posted July 4, 2010 RedSquare "representation" at the WHCC show did not begin until 2008. I was there all weekend; where was the "offical" RedSquare representation? No one was handing out business cards with RedSquare Forum on them nor was there a canopy covered with RedSquare Forum banners like the GTtalk guy's canopy. I think as far as "official representation" that only happened at the 2008 show when this forum was really beginning to take off and become popular. Everyone here was getting along, and the group of collectors that associate here made themselves a presence at that show. There were decals, banners, magnets and business cards made to hand out and promote the forum. I don't think much of that made it past the 2008 show. Since then, personality and attitude rifts have come and gone, there are several "sub-groups" of people within RS now, and several of those groups don't necessarily have the same ideas or play nicely with each other, which overall is fine... RS is not the WHCC. TT's pics are from the official RS tents that were set up at the 2008 show. I too was unclear as to the question, "where was the representation?"... could have meant 2008 or this year.... As for your question Butch... the membership of RS is but a scratch in the membership of the WHCC. There are probably more collectors who don't participate in the online forums than those who do. We online guys are a small percentage of the hobby. Add to that the fact that many collectors do not participate in the same online communities (ie... yahoo groups, forums and other such groups) and RS's number gets even smaller. Oh... and I think you've got something in TP trading! Sounds like money to be made.

stevasaurus 22,763 #32 Posted July 4, 2010 Just because you collect something, doesn't mean you collect it as an investment. Take wine...I collect local wines from places I have been...different states and areas. I am going to pull this out on holidays and special occasions and drink it. If I was going to invest and collect wines...different animal...no drinking and would look to sell at a higher price in the future. If you are collecting Wheel Horses for investment, I think you are in the wrong hobby. I don't see anybody getting out the time they put in to redoing these horses. On the other hand...the guys parting them out could be making a ton more then they are worth. They are not collectors. What do you think the percentage is of us that just fell into or grew up with a horse and just want to fix it up. At the show...I did not see any "official" representation for RS. What I did see was a bunch of guys that want to put the faces with the names. If there is something wrong with that...BYE. I met a ton of people at the show, and they were not all RS. One was a Phil. Fliers fan...I was wearing a Blackhawk's shirt. We became friends. That is why we have shows...isn't it?
JimD 3,345 #33 Posted July 4, 2010 I think I need to clarify my question to TT in an earlier post. What I was getting at was that I think there should be "official representation" at the show. The owner, admins, and mods should represent Redsquare at this event to promote the forum and add members. My asking what those pics had to do with this years show was meant to suggest this. I guess I should have elaborated further. It's up to the team running this forum to decide who should represent it, and it shouldn't be someone taking it upon themselves to do so. So if I offended you, whomever you may be, I apologize. JimD.
HorseFixer 2,012 #34 Posted July 4, 2010 they convinced me to re-join and not let a few individuals spoil it for me. So I contacted Karl and explained that I wanted to renew my membership which he did. The bottom line is there are others out there who just collect for the sake of it. Some have no affiliation with any group or organization. Some do. As far as I'm concerned as long as you are doing something that you enjoy, it really doesn't matter! And I am glad you did!
Butch 194 #35 Posted July 5, 2010 I don't know how many collectors there are or how many members the WHCC has. But RS has over 3000 members which to me is a lot. When I saw the 30 or so RS members it just made me wonder who the others were of which there were many. Even thought the show is put on by WHCC I guess I thought the majority of the people there were also from RS when in actuality the RS group was small. I can't see Red Square having an official tent handing out literature or business cards since it is only a forum with no source of revenue. Butch S. RS is not the WHCC. Lord Helmutt, I'am new here at RS and did not know of the strong current under the calm waters! I have spent a lot of time on this forum and I'am not a computer wiz. I don't spend any time on the computer other than this forum! I wanted to find out about a 854 I bought at an automotive swap meet and found this site! Did not know anything about Wheel Horse then! now because of Red Square I own 10 WH! I was at the WHCC show as a proud RS member! But I also did not think RS was promoted well. Is there any resentment between Joe Six Pac collector and RS? Just want to know! HORSEFEATHERS!

BPjunk 184 #39 Posted July 5, 2010 Butch, Ifn's ya' own or love a Wheel Horse garden tractor then ya' belong at the Annual Wheel Horse Show ! Ifn's Red Square had only 1 member present at the show then Red Square would be represented. People had found out about and gone to the Wheel Horse Show through the many avanues I use to promote the show ..... not just the internet. Divisions of Wheel Horse people NEVER ! Never divide, maybe a better choice of words would be to categorize our interests. I have always felt that if all the people who came to the Annual Wheel Horse Show with their tractors over the years past would come to one show then the world record for tractor show attendance would be broken by and held by us for eternity ! Wild Bill P.S. Wheel Horses love Steak and Shake ! Attached Image

I just want to see people keep them out of the scrap yard. After they are gone, they are gone....
