Who are all the collectors?

Recommended Posts

Butch

I know there were some Red Square members who were at the show but not in the group photo but I think it is only a handful more.

So who are the many many other collectors that are there? I guess some are there because they have parts to sell.

But there is still a large group of collectors who were at the show with their WH's.

Are they from other WH groups?

Are they multiple tractor collectors and only bring their WH's?

I'm sure there are those who don't like clubs but still collect and come to show their stock off.

I guess there could be collectors who don't have internet but still collect WH's.

Some of the groups there appear to be rather large and who are they? Long time friends

who collect?

I was curious as to who all the others were.

Everyone at that show should be card-carrying members of the Wheel Horse Collectors Club.

RedSquare "representation" at the WHCC show did not begin until 2008.

Butch,

I went to the show last year but not as a member of Redsquare or the WHCC. As a matter of fact I had been a member of Redsquare but resigned a few weeks before the show because of some differences with a few of the members  . Once I got there and started to talk to some of the others showing their tractors, I realized that most of them were not members of any club. Just die hard Wheel Horse fans who liked to collect and restore them. Some were members of various groups like MTF, RS and other sites but for all the same reason. To hunt down information and parts. After talking to a few of the elder and wiser collectors and telling them of my issues I was having here on Redsquare, they convinced me to re-join and not let a few individuals spoil it for me. So I contacted Karl and explained that I wanted to renew my membership which he did.

The bottom line is there are others out there who just collect for the sake of it. Some have no affiliation with any group or organization. Some do. As far as I'm concerned as long as you are doing something that you enjoy, it really doesn't matter!

I myself am not a collector but I do own one. For me it's a nice little get away to visit with some friends from RS and look at the tractors up close. I was curious who the others were of which some appeared to be with large groups.

Some of the groups might have been members of the WHCC who have attended many shows. They met each other at the show and started hanging out when they come to Arendtsville. They might not see or talk to each other between shows but still consider the others in the group friends. Might not even own a computer. Kind of a Wheel Horse guy thing :D , most wives and non-'Horsemen wouldn't understand.

Buzz...don't count the wives out. I just took mine to her first show, and in spite of the record heat...wants to go again. :D She understands. Now, I don't think she would understand 25 or 30 horses. Man's got to know his limitations.

My wife was out riding the RJ toady. She doesn't give a hoot about tractors, but she understands the fascination. I really need to get a picture of that too ...

Anynomous.......

If you know anything about Wheel Horse tractors, they hold their value quite well.

As for "collecting" them.....if you have any number of the same thing, it IS a "collection".

Last year I made up a t-shirt for David and myself that said WHTOS on the front....short for:

Wheel Horse Tractor Operating Society

on the back it says.....

Collect Em

Work Em AND

Love EM

We have 35 between the 2 of us. Some are only for show, and we work most of the others. Each has its own attachment. Makes it easier than changing them every time you need to do a different job.

RedSquare "representation" at the WHCC show did not begin until 2008.

I was there all weekend; where was the "offical" RedSquare representation? No one was handing out business cards with

RedSquare Forum on them nor was there a canopy covered with RedSquare Forum banners like the GTtalk guy's canopy. :D

Are these pics from the 2010 show? If not, what do they have to do with official "representation" at this year's show? :D

Birdie :thanks:

While I do find them to have value to me they do depreciate a lot over time compared to inflation of the dollar as per the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index (calculator link below).

For example.

Lets say there is a New Old Stock tractor of an original retail price of $2000 in 1975 that was found and went up for sale today. In order for it to keep up with inflation it would need to sell for $8,110.71 in today's dollars according CPI http://www.bls.gov/cpi/ The few new old stock tractors (and parts) I've seen for sale usually sell for at or below the same original dollar number (not accounting for inflation) which in many cases is a 50% + discount if you factor in inflation. In my opinion the true value is unlocked when they are used to accomplish the tasks they were designed for VS paying a third party or sitting collecting dust.

Just because I have "any number of the same thing" doesn't mean I have a collection. I have many rolls of toilet paper that I buy in bulk at Sam's Club; am I a TP collector too? OK, maybe I do collect toilet paper but I try to use it before it has a chance to depreciate LOL. :D

I wasn't expecting Red Square to have an Official tent handing out business cards. All I ever expected to see were some RS Banners here and there from some people to let you know they are members of the forum. It's not a dues paying club or anything like that.
