Work Horse GT1600

Recommended Posts

Started by just removing the sheetmetal. I wound up stripping the hood because everywhere I sanded I found rust. The rest turned out ok and just needed a good sanding. Pressure washed the frame and sandblasted the needed areas. I went with a self etching primer (NAPA, made my Martin Senior) and Ford Gray(Valspar Implement) which is a semi close match but I wish it was a little darker now. The decals will really set if off if I can ever get hold of vinylguy (!!!!!!). Frame will be painted black as well as foot controls.

Nice looking project, Danno - great work so far!

As to Vinylguy, Terry just gets really busy sometimes. It's not that he doesn't want the work or care about us, he's just a very talented guy with a ton of business to tend to. The end product is well worth the wait in my experience with him!

I understand with vinylguy. I'll give him a call now that I am back on land. Thanks for the compliments so far.

Here's the progress today...gloss (yes gloss) black on the frame, instrument and gear panels, painted the foot rests/boards. Don't be too critical of some of the finishes, this is a worker and some of the flaws will be covered with decals.

Got the rear wheels painted this morning, firgured I'd do some assembly while I wait on paint to dry...

Oh after reading another post about using bedliner material for the foot rest I decided to give it a try. DON'T get the spray can. I clogged on the second coat  . I had used the roll on stuff by Herculiner on a trailer door/ramp in the past and it has held up great for over 5 years...not too sure about this stuff.

OK, I'll bite. Why would you leave the front blade on during a restore?

I think it would be easier to work on and move around with it off.

It's really pretty easy to get on and off.

Your answer sir is....Absolute and Total laziness

I know it's easy to install and remove, I put it on. However, if you noticed the nifty little hitch I have back there it makes it an absolute pain in the arse. It actually hasn't made things too dificult and any overspray..no worries, the blade is next to be restored but after I spread out a load of gravel.

Funny you were the first to ask, I expected it much earlier!!!

Restoration looks great and quick progress.

I was afraid to ask about the blade. I thought it was some trick for making the restoration go faster that everyone knew, except me.

No trick, just pure laziness. Take an extra 2 hours to save 10 minutes. The progress can go quick when you have your days to yourself, but then this is mainly a cosmetic restoration. The real restoration will hopefully be this winter on my 516 with a complete teardown.

I recognize you avatar from you blackhood restoration, read it today. Looks like you've got your hands full and making some good progress!!! Real nice work.

I should have the hood blackout done tommorow...or monday, we'll see how much time Mrs Danno allows me to spend outdoors this weekend.

So is it done yet? I have no problem if its not because I know how long these things can take.

But if it is done, then more pictures?

It's done short of the decals and the front wheels. I've spoken with Terry and requsested them, so hopefully when I am back from work in a couple of weeks they'll be there waiting for me. For the front wheels, I've found a set of WH wheels with newer tires on them that I'm looking into getting.

Put it to work last week, spread 10 tons of gravel on the driveway, graded some garden boxes the the home's previouse owner had built and worked like a champ. These tractors are "da BOMB"!!!!

Thanks, I hope I can get the decals SOON!!!!!

It's been a great worker, I ran it for almost 6 hours straight while I used a dethatcher with 4 blocks on it to rake the driveway, then moved straight to the 10 tons of fresh gravel to grade it out in a new parking area that I created. The finished product was near perfect and for a total investment of $400 for the tractor and plow....not a bad deal at all
