Shuboxlover 478 #1 Posted June 26, 2010 I finally got around to inspecting the D to see where it was leaking at. The MAJOR oil leak is indeed engine oil, and is coming from the back of the motor somewhere. If you look in the first picture, the leak is somewhere back by the engine block, near or above the oil filter mount....(maybe up by the flywheel ) that's pure speculation though. I can sit there and watch oil drip (not run, but pretty dang bad) down onto the starter and the bottom of the block. (as shown in pic #2) The second somewhat minor leak is (I think) coming from the front of the hydro pump (as shown in pic #3) I am more concerned about the engine oil leak, but would like to get both fixed. Does anyone have any idea what may be leaking. I am not familiar with 16HP onan's so I don't really know where to start. rickv1957 72 #4 Posted June 26, 2010 The oil filter mount is bolted to side of engine,might be the leak,hope it is not the crankshaft seal,Hydro leak looks to be the shaft seal,Does your right head tin still fit on with that oil sending unit as it is not factory,Rick Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I do not have the right side engine tin. Is the Hydro seal hard to put in? What is involved with replacing the crank shaft seal? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
wh79d160 52 #6 Posted June 26, 2010 The front pump seal (WH # 7877) is a CR seal # 7474. While you have the pump out, you just as well replace the trunnion shaft seal on side linkage too. (WH #103461) is a CR seal #6763. And while you've gone that far you just as well replace the manifold o-ring & the hydro valve o-rings. Look the hoses over good for cracks while you're in there. You will have to remove engine to replace seals,hopefully if your crank seal is bad,crank bearing is not loose as well,you should replace head tin as it directs air to cool right side,Rick Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Is it just a matter or disassembly to get the seals changed (gaskets and seals) or is there more to it than that? What would be the symptom of a bad crank bearing, cuz the engine runs VERY smooth. tgranthamfd 29 #11 Posted June 27, 2010 Is that a oil sending unit or a pressure switch in pic #1? Have you changed the engine oil yet? If not someone could have messed up the rubber seal on the filter or left it off completely, just a thought though. I have seen oil pressure switches, on Chevy's, leak like crazy when the switch goes out, again just brain storming I don't know squat about the D series stuff or onan's. Shuboxlover 478 #14 Posted June 27, 2010 Thanks for the suggestions guys, I don't think it's leaking from there, wouldn't it be leaking right at the switch??? It seems to leaking farther "into" the engine. I am guessing some disassembly will be required to find out, but the thing I'm worried about is, it only really leaks when the engine is running, so how would I tell where the leak is coming from if I have some of it torn apart. What kind of fluid does the hydro pump use??? Is the reservoir for the FEL (the left side upright) supposed to get pretty hot when in use? What kind of fluid does the FEL need? Over heating is not good for hydros...(still trying to figure out how to put a fan in my D200 with 3 pt and PTO....) As to your engine leak what does your oil pressure gauge read when running? If the sending unit is the leak I would think the reading would be somewhat low. Yes the left support column gets pretty warm when I am using the loader...nothing to worry about... Shuboxlover 478 #19 Posted June 27, 2010 Well, I looked into my oil leak this afternoon. Here is what I found. I started it up again to see if I could pinpoint exactly where it was leaking. I think I saw a oil leaking from the top of the oil filter mount. It didn't seem like enough oil was coming out of there, compared to what was dripping on the ground. But I decided to tear into in and see if the gasket was bad or what. Once I got enough things off to get to the filter mount, I noticed the top bolt was not tight ( I didn't see any gap between the lock washer and the mounting ear or bolt head) but I was able to turn the bolt 1/2 to 3/4 turn until it was very snug. The bottom was not very sung either, not as loose as the top, but not tight enough. I cleaned everything up really well, and used blue RTV gasket maker to seal it up. HOPEFULLY this will solve the issue. What do you guys think? The more I think about it, it kind of makes sense. It only leaked when it was running. Don't you think that if it was the crank seal, it would leak just sitting there, and it wouldn't leak as much as it was? I'm gonna let the RTV set up, and hopefully put it back together tomorrow night. On another issue.....where could I get a oil pressure switch? wh79d160 52 #21 Posted June 28, 2010 Mine is a 79 & it has a fan, so I assume your 80 should have one also. I was talking to Rick the other night about taking the pto assy. out of a 74 D180 I have & putting it in the 160 w/fan & was asking if the PTO shaft would make it past the fan. He said it would. Rick probably has 6 or 7 NOS D's w/fans & R/PTO's . He could probably snap you a pic. The fan is connected to a temp sensor which, I think, is the one that snaps on the hydro manifold pipe right close to the fan. I think it comes on @ about 130 degrees. Tom, Perry Ks.
