Work Horse restore

Recommended Posts

Ok so I'm getting ready to do a quick "resotre" of my work horse gt 1600 and wanted your opinions of color. I know the rule of thumb is basically whatever fits your fancy. I was thinking of going with wheel horse red instead of work horse pewter gray. Would the be...blasphemy to the wheel horse namesake??

Oh, I've already sent an email to vinylguy for a set of decals, I will be sticking with the work horse name. He does have the gt 1642 decals on his site, any idea's on the difference between the 1600 and 1642? From what I can tell they are both 8 speeds but that's about it.

If you are looking to clean it up for a good worker I would paint it the same color and not red. You will make it look like something it is not IMO. I have seen another member here paint the frame black and the sheet metal silver and that is a very good look if you are trying to change it slightly. If you go red then any chips or scratches will be silver unless you are sandblasting. Good luck in what ever your choice.

This is just my opinion but I would do a black frame and engine, pewter sheet metal, and wheel horse red rims to make them stand out. But whatever color you choose is the right one.

Thanks everyone who chimed in. My personal opinion is to keep everything original (as with classic cars etc) so why should a classing wheel (work) horse be any different??

So there we have it. I'm going to have a busy time when I get home..picking up my latest find and prepping this GT for a sprucing up.

Cant wait!!!

One of the members here painted his dark pewter color and that one turned out very nice , maybe you could do a "search" to find it.

Awesome!! Thanks for the link. I will say that is a really good looking tractor. Still hesitant to stray from a more original looking color though since that is what set the work horse apart from the wheel horse.

Anyone have any idea how to get ahold of vinylguy? I've sent him an email and no luck???

Might be hard to get a hold of, almost, anyone this weekend with the show and all. Was thinking about it, and somewhere on here I saw photos of a workhorse done all in red, looked good.

Oh you know a work horse would look GREAT in red....it would look like a wheel horse .

Seems I have been shamed into not making it something it's not, even with keeping the work horse decals.

Good point about the show, guess I'll have to be patient.

Yup! That is the one I was talking about. Nice huh?

It is your tractor you paint it the way you want, no rules on it. This just gives you ideas.

Yeah, I know.... <_<

Still not sure. I've been reading the resto forums about spraybomb's and got into one that just went FOREVER. I couldn't believe it!! I want those 15 minutes of my life back.

Gonna use the rattle can on this one none-the-less, I've become quite handy with them in the past.

As far as color...I'm thinking perhaps Ford Gray, black frame, wheels (maybe) and brake/clutch pedals. I know it won't all get tied in until the decals get in. Oh, and the footrests done in bedliner material but only where the rubber pad would be normaly.
