wallfish 17,079 #3 Posted June 5, 2010 The belt is probably still spinning and catching the motor pulley. Is the belt guard installed? Look at the belt when you push the clutch and it should stop spinning. If the belt is moving then it will grind every time. The belt guard also guides the belt when the tension is released from pushing the clutch.
JUSS10 250 #4 Posted June 5, 2010 yes i think the belt is still moving. the side cover is on. what do i adjust to stop it from moving?
stevasaurus 22,862 #5 Posted June 5, 2010 There really is no adjustment. Did this just start to happen...was it running OK before? Try cleaning the drive pulleys with mineral spirits. The belt is suppose to stop turning when the tension pulley is depressed. :D
JUSS10 250 #6 Posted June 5, 2010 not sure how longs its been happening. just bought it two days ago. i plan to slowly restore it so i will clean all the pulleys. it may need a new belt too, haven't taken the cover off. just wasn't sure if there was a tip on adjusting the tensioner/brake setup. wallfish 17,079 #7 Posted June 6, 2010 There should be a tab like this on the front of the belt guard, under the pulley that guides the belt when the clutch is pushed. It should be directly under the pulley, this pic is a modified belt guard. If it's gone or bent down then the belt won't stop. It should be adjusted to about 1/4" from the belt when it's tight. Once you pull off the cover on the left side you will see all the adjustment spots. The brake band should be adjusted to grab slightly after the belt stops moving so you'll need to figure the belt issue out first
Don1977 604 #8 Posted June 6, 2010 Even if everything is working perfectly, you still need to give it a few seconds between when you have the clutch depressed and changing gears. Change them too quick it will grind every time.
Kelly 1,029 #9 Posted June 6, 2010 And the pcture above is not a good picture the crank shaft does not stick through the cover like that, that is someones custom job .
JUSS10 250 #10 Posted June 6, 2010 the cover doesn't even go over my crankshaft. it stops short of it
tgranthamfd 29 #11 Posted June 6, 2010 the cover doesn't even go over my crankshaft. it stops short of it That is how it should be, just adjust the stops as sugested above. There may or may not be one on top, too.
wallfish 17,079 #12 Posted June 6, 2010 It should be directly under the pulley, this pic is a modified belt guard. I thought I explained that :D
digiHorse 0 #13 Posted October 1, 2010 Wonder if people realize how often past posts help the next guy. Well this one did for me. Took my belt gaurd off for paint and suddenly couldn't get the tractor in gear. No problem. Awesome site.
