got my first wheel horse home!

Recommended Posts

well after a 2.5 hr drive to indiana, i loaded up my first wheel horse, a very nice 704. just got home and put it in the barn for the night. looks to be in great shape for its age. as stated in a previous post it has a few issues, the recoil start was removed because it was broken but i have all the parts to put it back together, maybe it can be fixed? and the tranny gets stuck. i drove in all 4 gears but when trying to off load it from the trailer it wouldn't come out of gear.

so i got a few questions. first is, is there a manual out there so i can learn how everything works? how does the clutch/brake work? i'm used to separate pedals for each. what should i do to get this thing up and running correctly? is there a good outline of a overhaul/refresher to make it run top notch? i plan to restore it but want to get it up and running well first.

i guess thats all for now but I'm sure i will have more questions. here are some pics, will get better ones tomorrow as these were taken in low light.

the clutch break pedal is all the same you push it down and the breaks are on and it disengages the belt so you can shift. if that makes sence :D

Nice find :D !

Now when you get a chance, swap the rear tires around as they are on backwards.

thanks rustynut. so in other words you can't shift from 1 to 2 while moving because the brake is applied when the clutch is pressed, is that correct?

well took it for a drive tonight (around 10:30) i'm sure my neighbors loved it. :D after taking a chunk out of my finger from getting it caught on the hood while pull starting it it finally started up and ran pretty good. popped out the shifter realigned the shifting forks and dropped it back in. started first pull this time and we were off. still doesn't seem to want to get in the gears that you pull the ever back on, maybe something is binding somewhere.

mower deck works so I'll drop that to get the blades off and sharpened.

also turned the tires around.

plan to start restoring it piece by piece.

Sorta right. Pushing the clutch in half way or so releases the drive belt. IF you are smooth you can shift on the go, but the gears aren't synchronized, so it's hard to do right. Pushing the clutch pedal all the way down applies the brake.

well got it out yesterday. checked to see if the deck works, sure enough. did a little tune up on the motor (cleaned the carb, set the points, new plug) then hopped on the beast and mowed the front yard. WOW for as old as this thing is, it has a great cut. best cut my yard has ever seen. it was a little bit of a chore with no governor and a ton of slop is the steering but for being that the front yard is on an incline i was really impressed. pretty excited to get this thing all cleaned up and tuned up. will be a real work horse when its all finished.
