JUSS10 250 #1 Posted June 2, 2010 well i'm searching for my first wheel horse (pre 65) and stumbled upon one thats within driving range for me. but there are two things about it that i want to make sure aren't a huge deal. first is the guy says it gets stuck between gears. my dad used to be a tractor mechanic many years ago and said that wasn't uncommon and it was most likely the ball at the end of the sifter. he said they use to build up some weld there then grind it down to the right shape. does that work with these older horses? also, the recoil broke and was removed, how hard or costly is it to find a recoil for these older engines. it seems like a solid deal from the sounds of it but just want to make sure i don't get hosed on my first buy. thanks Justin

JUSS10 250 #3 Posted June 2, 2010 ok thanks. and i forgot to mention, its a
stevasaurus 22,705 #4 Posted June 2, 2010 Being a 704, you should have a Kohler 7hp on her...much easier to find parts rather then it being a Tecumseh. The trans is very fixable...may be the 1/4" ball bearings and spring thingy(one or both of the balls may be worn out) .
WH nut 553 #5 Posted June 3, 2010 New recoils are still available through Kohler, about 80 buck I think. If you have troubles with the part number let me know. I bought one for my 704 last year
clintonnut 126 #6 Posted June 3, 2010 Sounds like if you just loosened the set screw that holds the shifter in and realigned the forks you would be just fine! Charlie
854WH 0 #7 Posted June 3, 2010 id buy it there only minor problems
JUSS10 250 #8 Posted June 3, 2010 sounds good. I plan to drive down to indiana tomorrow to pick it up. looked good from the pics (little blurry) but for the price i've seen some on here in much rougher shape so i'm pretty excited.

JUSS10 250 #10 Posted June 3, 2010 got a bit more info on the trans issue, this is what the seller sent me "has the transmission problem which I'm told its a missing ball to keep it from engaging in 2 speeds" i'm not 100% sure what he means by keeping it from engaging in two speeds but does that sound like a major issue or is that the ball bearing thing that was listed above? thanks
yankee495 0 #11 Posted June 3, 2010 I'd say buy one from Rick. But if you can't and you want to mow...look for one that ain't broke already. But if it is cheap...take it. I passed one up for 75... Boy am I sorry. Misspelled broke...left the R out.
JUSS10 250 #12 Posted June 3, 2010 well talked to the guy again, all hears work just gets stuck between sometimes and he also said that the belt tensioner needs a little work as it doesnt fully disengage when the clutch is pressed in. seems like for $150 its a fair price as it has a good deck and good wheels and tires. everything is original just a few little quirks. i've been looking but can't find anything cheaper that is that complete. or is $150 high? stevasaurus 22,705 #15 Posted June 3, 2010 here is my post that shows the trans torn apart and the rebuild. If one of the balls is bad or missing, you can buy them from ACE hardware for about .40 cents apiece. 1/4" ball bearings. There is a spring with a piece of rod in it between the 2 balls. The pics should show where the "thingy" is. http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=17168 Sounds like a good deal to me also. Help is here if you need it. :D
