brider 0 #1 Posted June 1, 2010 OK, so now I've got something: Charger 10 Model 1 0410 7 Serial 863483 My most pressing concern is how do I check the oil lever in the Kohler, and what is the proper way to read the rear axle dipstick (hot/cold?). The engine has a big hex plug at the bottom on the crankcase on front/back, and also on the TOP of the case at the cyl base level. See pic; only fwd bottom plug is visible, and also top of case (left side of photo). I pulled the bottom plug, no discernable "fill" level surface, just a hole into the sump. Top hole: No dipstick. tgranthamfd 29 #5 Posted June 1, 2010 That plug on the front of the engine should have a rod or "dip stick" attached to it. At least it does on my brothers 10 hp Kohler. On his it looks as if someone did an oil change and marked the full level on the rod that is there and no other marks. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
brider 0 #6 Posted June 2, 2010 OK, no dipstick on either plug. One plug would have to be a LONG dipstick, the other would have to be short, but like I said, neither one is there. The PO said there was a dipstick at the upper plug. I wonder if it fell off? I would've heard it in the engine by now. My computer does not have the capacity to download and open the Kohler manual. Can someone tell me what the oil-change CAPACITY is? I'll just drain it and re-fill and measure the oil level. Thanks! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

The kohler part number is A-235320-S but it's no longer available. This dipstick has a square pipe plug head and a 8 7/8" blade. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Did I read right that you pulled the plug from the front of the oil pan and found no oil? If that's the case, DON'T START IT UP! I'm hoping I just read that wrong. I agree with Buzz. The pipe plug on the top of the crankcase (Just behind the PTO when looking at the engine from the PTO side) should have a round rod type dipstick on it. Look at the bottom of the plug and see if it doesn't have a small hole in it. If it does, you can probably just find a piece of round rod to go in the hole. Fill with the correct measured amount of oil (2 quarts) and mark the level on the rod. Now you have a dipstick. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Yes, there's oil in it, I can reach my finger down the plug right above where the motor mounts and get to oil, but my finger's not calibrated... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Duff 206 #14 Posted June 3, 2010 Just my humble two cents worth, but for the cost of a couple quarts of oil vs. a blown engine, I'd drain out what's in there and refill with two quarts. That will give you a known level to work with, whether by "finger calibration" or just a marking on a screwdriver or some such to use as a dip stick until you can get the real McCoy.
