Fuel line routing

Recommended Posts

IthacaJeff

Hi all:

For the second time in about 6 weeks the fuel line on my 416-8 has developed a leak,

somewhere underneath the dash tower. The first time it happened I chalked it up to

age and did not bother to figure out the culprit. I've not yet taken the newly ripped

line out because I don't yet have a replacement, but I'm guessing it has something

to do with either the steering gear or the clutch linkage. My question is, thus, is there

a specific route for the fuel line to go? Anyone got any pics?

I'm losin' money here; not just the fuel line but the $3/gal down in the grass!

Thanks,

Jeff in Ithaca/Enfield

There is definitely a specific route that the line follows.

Although I don't have pictures, (yet :D ) I can tell you that from the shut-off, the line travels forward and to the right side of the fender bracket mounting bolts (on top of the tranz) where it should be secured with a "P" clamp. From the clamp, the line proceeds forward, passing under the brake crossover shaft and then up and through the larger hole on the right side of the hoodstand. (this hole normally has a rubber grommet protecting the edges, and the seat switch/tail light wires should pass through it also) Once the line emerges on the front side of the hoodstand, it should pass through a cable ("zip") tie that holds the line away from the lift lever shaft and arms.

Both of my 416's are Onan-powered and the line kind of swoops around in front of the lower steering shaft support and then up to the fuel pump. It shouldn't be much different on a single cylinder 416.

Terry,

Thanks. It seems I've routed the line on the wrong side (left side) where it may

be getting pinched by the steering gear. Even without pictures you described it

well!
