Redoing 42 Inch Mower Deck On My C-165 Auto

Recommended Posts

Butch

PS that POR 15 is some hard stuff, when I painted it on the bottom some of it dripped through the bolt holes and left bubbles on the top side. You know I had to grind them of with a grinder, that is SOME HARD STUFF WHEN IT DRIES.

Chas

Yes it is hard. I've had to drill it out of holes that it got into.

Did some more work on the deck. When I cut the bad places out, I had to cut a piece out where the adjuster is mounted.I had to drill new holes to mount it,also had to make the holes square with a file. (Carrage Bolts) worked out good.

This is what I did.

Also got new wheels and rollers.

Here is the picture.

I have this same deck sitting out back, the whole section where the spindles mount is thin and rotted through. I'm wondering if I could cut out the top and just make the deck flat with no recessed area....?

Chas,

Looks good. How much did the resto cost? The belt guard for your I think is the same one for mine. Mine is one piece and I got it on ebay for around $10 plus shipping. I too bought a 2 pc pair that did not fit. They were NOS and I hope to sell them for what I paid.

The restore cost 3 bills or better. The belt guards on my deck come in a LH P/N 107029 RH P/N107028 Mower Deck Model# 05-42MS02

Well guys I did about 21/2 acres Sat. with this deck, did a good job too. So I wanted to see how it looked after I finished, with the POR 15 painted on the bottem side, and here is what it looked like.

This picture shows where it stuck to the holt heads, and i cleaned it of.

You couldn't have picked a better time to redo your deck. I've been trying to work on a governeur problem and my deck belt went. Bought a nice kevlar half inch by 84 (good guess since the old belt shredded beyond recognition) and was sure I could figure out everything except the correct way to wind the belt. Thanks for the great pics. There are a few posts that have some really good shots so placing the belt turned out to be the easiest part. What I should have asked is how to drop the deck. (I have a 416-8) Took waaay too long, but she's done. Didn't need that knuckle anyway. Maybe I should rename myself "Forever a Greenhorn"

Very nice job on this 42 inch deck and a great tutorial!

We have one from a C-121 we need to rebuild, paint and weld a new steel piece in a small rust hole. we will use the Por-15 on the undeside also. That stuff works great and leaves a real nice finish.

Thanks Chas for the great tutorial on rebuilding. This helps a lot with the undestanding that is not in the Wheel Horse manuals and encourages entering into the unknown without fear!

Chas :thanks:

Always have the sun behind you when taking pics. I'm sure Jim will post some of his pics just as soon as he gets a new canopy for his camera and some gun powder for his flash. :D That stuff isn't easy to track down in today's digital age.

Great job on your deck Chas. That is another deck saved that most guys might have tossed in the scrap pile. Sometimes ya gotta make do with what ya got and it turned out nice.

Thanks a lot for the atta-boys fellows  I was born in the first half of the last century (1934) Things don't turn out as well as I would like. But I will keep trying as long as I can get around. I think this kind of thing keeps me alive. :D

I have to do some work on the deck that I got with my 418-8 and would like to know the easiest way to remove it from the tractor. Im the same model year as you (1934) with my first Wheel Horse. Enging was frozen (Kohler Magnum 18hp) But marvel mystery oil and perserverance freed it up. Now starts right up, no smoke. Lucky. Would like to get started on the deck. Info please. It is a 42 rear discharge geck/ Thanks! Clark
