rmaynard 15,602 #1 Posted May 7, 2010 Just reassemble my 8-speed transmission a couple of weeks ago, but did not put oil in it until yesterday. When the case was open, I removed the brake shaft and made sure that it was clean and free of any burrs. I lubricated it before installing the seal. Yesterday I put in the prescribed amount of oil (2 quarts). I just noticed that I have an oil spot on the floor directly below the brake shaft. Closer inspection reveals a trail of fluid from emanating from the seal. There is no significant up/down play in the shaft. Should I assume that I have a bad seal? I used a Toro brand seal #100441. rickv1957 72 #2 Posted May 7, 2010 Bob,I always use a little sealer on outside of seals when installing, dont know that is your leak though,Rick
MikesRJ 552 #3 Posted May 8, 2010 Bob, is the oil coming from the inside diameter of the seal, or the outside diameter? Can you tell?
C-Series14 15 #4 Posted May 8, 2010 That is the seal PN I used on my C-141 8-Speed. Have not filled it yet, hope it holds!
rmaynard 15,602 #5 Posted May 8, 2010 Bob, is the oil coming from the inside diameter of the seal, or the outside diameter? Can you tell? I will have to pull the drum, not tonight. Bob
rmaynard 15,602 #6 Posted May 8, 2010 Bob, is the oil coming from the inside diameter of the seal, or the outside diameter? Can you tell? It appears to be coming from the inside. Enough is leaking that in 12 hours I had a spot about 3" in diameter on the cardboard under the transmission. Does anyone else make a seal for this other than the ones available from Toro? That's good info. I know NAPA is always more expensive, but if it's a good fix, so be it. Bob
MikesRJ 552 #9 Posted May 8, 2010 There is an alternative seals made by Chicago Rawhide. I'll send you copies of the two cross-references I have for bearings and seals. Find the WH-PN from your tractor and locate it in the list below, then go from there at NAPA. mnWHfan 47 #10 Posted May 9, 2010 You might have cut the new seal on the side of the keyway slot. When I put mine in, I wrapped tape around the shaft so that it covered the keyway. Then I lubricated the shaft and tape and slid the new seal over the shaft, then removed the tape. It seemed to work good for me.

tgranthamfd 29 #12 Posted May 9, 2010 I put one on my C160 from toro and it still leaks, too.
clintonnut 126 #13 Posted May 9, 2010 I never buy those kinds of things from toro. Too expensive. I buy from bearing shops and they come direct from the manufacture. You have no idea how long that seal has been sitting on the shelf. New ones are NEW! Charlie
gwgdog66 23 #14 Posted May 9, 2010 I used the Napa Seal number listed above, on my old C-100. There was more rubber in the center compared to the toro seal.

Where are you getting yours? Bob
rmaynard 15,602 #16 Posted May 15, 2010 Today I removed the Toro seal and replaced it with a NAPA 7410 seal. The NAPA seal has a stainless steel ring, where the Toro is all plastic. It has been 12 hours now and NO leaks. Thanks to everyone that replied with their input. Looks like a few bucks more for the NAPA brand is well worth it. No more Toro-brand seals for me. gsorgee@gmail.com 3 #19 Posted August 25, 2020 Can I replace the brake shaft oil seal no. 100441 from the outside with out pulling and disassembling the trans.?
pfrederi 17,866 #20 Posted August 25, 2020 Yes remove brake drum the dig out old seal with a dental pick or similar. Cover the shaft keyway with electrical tape when you install new one.
rmaynard 15,602 #22 Posted August 25, 2020 It's been quite some time since I first posted this thread. However, I still have that tractor, a 1977 B-100, and the seal is still holding. Over the last 10 years, I have not used a plastic Toro seal, opting for the stainless steel seals from manufacturers such as SKF and Chicago Rawhide. They used to cost more, but with the rediculously high price for Toro parts, they are a bargain.
Bill D 1,933 #23 Posted August 26, 2020 I bought SKF seals from Rock Auto. They were between $3.00 to $4.50 apiece. I replaced all the seals in a 312-8 and no leaks yet. Bill
