Sickle Bar

Recommended Posts

biz-buz

Hello,

I have seen various photos of different sickle bars, which I did not even know existed for the Wheel Horse. Does anybody know of any sickle bars for sale that could be fitted to a Commando, ie B-80 3 speed machine with a 12 hp engine fitted currently. I am willing to consider any type of equipment, Wheel Horse or any other brand x equipment, if it can be adapted to fit a Wheel Horse. By preference I would refer the largest possible mid mount fitting.

Thanks for any pointers. :D

I'm sure there are many members here that may have them available. Posting where you are located will be a big help. I for one have one that I may be willing to part with.

being in France makes it kinda expensive to ship from the states. Did you do a search around you?

Forgive me, I am actually in the SW of France just north of Bordeaux. I am also looking for other various bits and pieces it will probably be worth my while posting a list of all the things I am looking for and then try to assemble them together to get a majority of them home in one lot. I have asked for a quote from a supplier in the UK but as yet have no idea what he can provide me with or how much for.

What sort of sickle bar do you have? I am not up to speed on whether spares are available such as blade sections or fingers? or whether there are modern equivalents available which are more or less usable?

The other parts I need are as follows: for my Gearbox type 5085

2-27 101880 x2 Axle Rear (Used to be p/n 102487)

7939 x2 Snap Ring

2-28 3522 x1 Gear Input

2-30 3523 x1 Gear Hi- Second

2-32 3524 x1 Gear Low Reverse

2-41 3525 x1 Gear Cluster

2-45 4204 x1 Gear Reverse Idler

2-52 3912 x2 Gasket Case

For my Model 1-0140 (B-80/Commando 800) Serial N

I know France is not next door but the problem is supply!! There are just no parts, or very few available in Europe, especially of the Sickle Bar type!

Perhaps there is a modern equivalent I can adapt to the chassis if I have a couple of spare latches to attach it? :D

Not to rain on any parades but I found my 753 with a Sickle bar didn't work terribly well. Ground speed in first was too fast and the sickle choked in heavy grass. I put on an 8 speed and that made a world of difference. In thick grass 2nd or 3rd low range works nicely....

I use a 7' sickle bar on my Case DC3 tractor to cut several acres and it is done mostly in 1st gear. Sickle bars do not like high ground speeds, especially if the grass is green and thick.

added: Speed issue is why farmers converted from haybines (which use a sickle cutter) to disc cutters (high speed rotary blades)

Never mind mine. I not even gonna try shipping it over-seas.

Sorry.

Sorry everybody, I have obviously missed something here! If I live in France surely the cost and inconvenience associated with my having to get any items from the US to Europe is my problem not yours?

If you do not wish to sell me an item that is one thing, but if you are just losing interest as I live in Europe, this is a bit disheartening!

As there is nothing, or very little, available over here, as far as I am aware, this severely limits my potential to renovate and improve my machine, which is surely one of the objectives of this forum??

Fireman, are you really sure that you are not interested?

I really don't need to sell it or want to. But if someone offered me some ridiculous offer and came and picked it up, I then would consider selling it. I would suggest watching Ebay. If i'm not mistaken, there's one on there right now.

Although you may not have access to a wheel horse sickle bar because of your location, you do have other options. I am sure that there are small sickle bars of the BCS variety in use over in france. It may be easier to adapt one of these pieces to your machine. The wheel horse is, after all, a very adaptable machine. There are pictures on this site from a fellow in Belgum who has either a BCS or Gravely attachment pto attached to his front tach-a-matic. Even the walk behind single purpose sickle bar mowers have some potential for conversion to wheel horse. All this type of fitment will require some cutting and welding unfortunately. Good luck to you.

Does anybody have a serviceable/overhauled 6/8 speed transmission and a sickle bar suitable for a b-80??, the ones I have seen are all very similar to the 5085 box I currently have but just have the extra gear cluster to give the low ratio. My current drive shafts are 1" diameter but I am not sure if the 6/8 speed has the same diameter, or if the large diameter shafts will work with my five stud wheel hubs which I also need; the advantage being that I also need the hubs, so if the drive shafts are bigger I will have to find the hubs to match if they exist. Any help please?

Perhaps one person might have both the 6/8 speed transmission (+ hubs) and a sickle bar which they would be willing to part with?? This would be brilliant.

In addition to the transmission and the sickle bar I would also like to try and source: a clutch housing and pulley (p/n 9209), Fuel Tank (p/n 8028), 2x wheel hubs (p/n 100174), 2xWoodruff Key #15 (p/n 937022) and a Parking Brake Lever (p/n 5544).

I know this is a bit of a tall order but if anybody has any of these items for sale, I (and my B-80) would really be most grateful.

I will arrange collection and payment, that is not a problem. I have a very friendly shipper with a state wide network I use for sending large crates to Europe.

Fingers crossed! :D

Here's a link to BCS america, a manufacturer of walk behind tractors. They make a modern version of the gravely walk behind tractor. They do not sell conversion kits for wheel horse, this is something you would have to make.

http://www.bcs-america.com/

Also look at the following link:

http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?...17305&hl=wh1257

under the pictures of a lawn sweeper are pictures of what I am referring to. An adapter used to run walk behind tractor attachments.

I love it, I have never seen anything like this, :USA: it looks super handy, I am very interested, although having the sickle bar out the front is not the place it should be for me!

Just out of interest is there a sort of unbreakable flail mower one can fit out the front, with cutting chains or cables or something super strong like that, which is not too afraid of stones and big trunks hidden in the grass?

I have PM'ed you! :D

Ian posted this awhile ago. He's just across the Channel in England. You might be able to talk him out of it :D

I am sure there must be somebody somewhere who owns a Sickle Bar that is in need of a change of climate or is bored due to lack of exercise, and has requested a permanent move to France for some long term fitness training and monthly exercise?? :D
